DETROIT, Mich. – It was a game of career highs and school records as the University of Utah Lacrosse team beat Detroit Mercy in the rain and on the road, 24-11. Utah improved to 2-0 in ASUN play and 3-4 overall.
The Utes scored a school record 24 goals in the game, finishing with 69 shots including 43 on goal. Utah also won a program record 27 faceoffs (27-of-38) with its 54 ground balls being a season-high and ranking second all-time.
Utah scored nine goals in the third quarter which is a school record for goals in a single-quarter while its 13 goals in the first half tied the program record for goals in a single half (13 vs. Furman, 2020). In all, the Utes scored 32 points (24 goals, 8 assists), which ranks second all-time.
GAME LEADERS
The school records continued to fall on the individual front as well as junior
Jordan Hyde became the all-time leader in goals after scoring five in the game, giving him 78 career goals for the top spot. Junior
Tyler Bradbury also scored a season-high four goals, adding an assist for five points.
Koa Todd and
Ryan Stines each put up hat tricks in the game with Todd's being a career-high goal number with
Carson Moyer also contributing a multi-goal game with two. Together, the Utes had 12 different players score.
Faceoff specialist and midfielder
Cole Brams scored another program record for the Utes with 26 faceoff wins, breaking his own record of 23 set last year at Mercer. He also racked up a season-high 15 ground balls, which ranks second all-time at Utah.
Freshman
Nikko DiPonio also recorded a career-best six ground balls, adding a caused turnover for his fifth of the year.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Utah took an early 2-0 lead with 11:26 on the clock, starting with a goal from Moyer after he beat his defender one-on-one to get the low shot into the back of the net. The Utes second goal would come at the hands of Hyde after Bradbury found him open in front of the crease, giving Hyde his first of five goals in the game.
Detroit Mercy would get on the scoreboard with 8:53 to go in the period, but the Utes would answer with three unanswered goals in less than a minute from Stines, Bradbury and Hyde to make it 5-1 at the 7:32 mark.
The Titans made it a one-point game with 1:44 left in the first quarter, but Utah would once again go on a 3-0 scoring run to end the quarter with an 8-4 lead on two goals from Hyde and Todd's first of the game.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
After the Titans started the scoring in the second quarter, Utah would extend its lead back to four with Todd's second goal of the game after he broke past his defender to score right in front of the goal for the 9-5 advantage. It would start another three-goal streak for the Utes with
Cody Hart and Stines also finding the back of the net to give Utah a 11-5 lead with 10:47 to go.
Detroit Mercy countered with two unanswered goals of its own, but Utah continued putting pressure on the Titans with Brams and Bradbury answering to put the Utes up 13-7 with 6:58 left in the half. The Titans would score with under two minutes in the half with Utah heading into the third quarter with a five-goal lead.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The goals – and records – continued to fall for the Utes in the third quarter, putting away nine goals while only allowing one. The scoring barrage started after Detroit Mercy made it a 13-9 game before
Ryan Rogers starting a nine-goal run at the 13:46 mark.
Bradbury scored his third goal of the game, followed by Hyde's fifth and final goal of the game to make it 16-9 with 11:47 to go in the quarter.
Jared Andreala would swing his first goal in to continue to the scoring streak with Moyer scoring his second of the game right in front of the crease, putting the Utes up 18-9 with 4:48 remaining.
Stines racked up his 16
th goal of the season with 3:50 on the clock by going up and over his defender, followed by goals from Todd, Bradbury and
Justus Peterson to give Utah a 13-point lead heading into the final quarter of the game.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The fourth quarter saw several newcomers and the youth on the squad see quality minutes with
Luc Charbonnier scoring his first goal as a Ute off an assist from
Tyler Schifko for a 23-10 lead with 7:20 to go in the game.
Goalkeeper
Connor Hollison also got in some solid minutes in goal in the fourth quarter, coming away with seven saves. Freshman
Will Overly scored Utah's final goal of the game and his first at Utah, giving the Utes the school record for single-game goals and the 13-point victory at 24-11.

The Utes will remain on the road for a midweek match-up against Air Force on Wednesday, March 29 at 12 p.m. MT before returning to Ute Field on Friday, March 31 to take on Jacksonville at 6 p.m. MT.
