The First Pitch: Things to Know
Spring Break has arrived at the University of Utah and with the recess from classes, the Utah baseball team is out on the road this week. Tuesday night's contest brings the club to Orange County as the Utes take on Cal State Fullerton in a 7 p.m. matchup from Goodwin Field.

The Utes began their trip with a three-game series at UTSA from March 3-5 and traveled to California on Monday. Later this week, the team will head to the Pacific Northwest and prepare for its first Pac-12 Conference series at Washington (March 10-12).
Utah and the Titans last met in the season-opening series of 2021, with the Utes earning a 6-5 win in the finale of the three-game set. Jayden Kiernan had two hits in that victory, TJ Clarkson drove in a run and scored, while Clarkson also went 4.1 innings and struck out two in his start. Coincidentally, Clarkson is projected to start Tuesday's matchup.
Utah is looking to bounce back from a pair of losses to end its series at UTSA. The Utes did win the opener by a 5-3 score last Friday, but the long ball was key for UTSA on Saturday and Sunday as the home club went yard five times.
Clarkson bookended the UTSA series with home runs and was 5-for-10 on the weekend. It capped a week that saw Clarkson earn Pac-12 Player of the Week honors.
Instrumental in the weekly award for Clarkson was a Feb. 27 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, in which Clarkson began the game at designated hitter, then went in to pitch 2.2 innings and hit two homers while pitching.
Newcomers coming on the scene of late include catcher Cameron Gurney, third baseman Jake Gish and outfielder Elijha Hammill. Each have reached base safely in eight-plus consecutive games, with Gurney also hitting safely in eight straight contests. Bruer Webster has also taken on the shortstop role after two seasons at Salt Lake Community College, winning back-to-back ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove awards.
Although the Utes fell short of reaching the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament, the relatively young club showed signs of promise for the future. Utah (26) had a nine-win improvement from the previous season, set Pac-12 era program records in seven offensive categories and had the program's first-ever ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winner in first baseman Alex Baeza.
Returning catcher/infielder Davis Cop, plus infielder Landon Frei, were named to the Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention team last season. Cop also was tabbed Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference.
