FULLERTON, Calif. – Freshman
Kaden Carpenter contributed a sacrifice fly and a squeeze bunt, the latter scoring
Jayden Kiernan with the game's deciding run as Utah (6-6) defeated Cal State Fullerton by a 3-2 score on Tuesday night at Goodwin Field.
Carpenter also made a web-gem catch in foul territory to end the bottom of the eighth inning, a huge moment with the tying run on base for the Titans at that point. Instead, Utah got out of the frame and then
Micah Ashman worked a 1-2-3 ninth to secure his third save of the season.
Kiernan, playing first base, along with catcher
Cameron Gurney each contributed two hits, with Gurney extending his hitting streak to nine games. Third baseman
Jake Gish also had an RBI.
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola (1-0) received the win for Utah, his first as a Ute. Lugo-Canchola pitched three shutout innings of relief with just one hit allowed and no walks, striking out five along the way.
After a scoreless first inning, the Utes put two runs on the board in the second stanza. Kiernan and Gurney each singled, with the latter getting Kiernan to third base. Kiernan then came home when Gish grounded out to shortstop. Carpenter was next up to bat and skied a fly ball to right field, deep enough for Gurney to come home and double Utah's lead.
The Titans countered with one run in the bottom of the second, and the 2-1 score remained until the sixth.
Kiernan led off the sixth with a base hit, moving to second on Gurney's single and taking third on a grounder by Gish. Instrumental in the lead-up to the squeeze was Gish hustling down the first base line, beating out a would-be double play ball.
As a result, Carpenter came up with just one away, and laid down the squeeze on the first pitch. Kiernan beat the flip to home, sliding in safely and giving Utah a 3-1 lead at the time.
Cal State Fullerton posted a run of its own in the sixth, but that would be all the scoring for the night. Utah had chances to extend the 3-2 lead later in the contest, putting runners on third base in both the seventh and ninth innings.
The Utes now prepare for a trip to Seattle and the team's Pac-12 Conference opening series at Washington. First pitch in the series opener comes at 6:05 p.m. MT on Friday, March 10.
