SEATTLE –
Cameron Gurney doubled and
Kai Roberts worked a pinch-hit walk to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but Washington closed it out from there as the Utah baseball team fell 5-2 in both teams' Pac-12 Conference opener on Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
The Utes (6-7, 0-1 Pac-12) will return for the middle game of the three-game series with Washington on Saturday, with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. MT.
Gurney's two-bagger extended his hitting streak to a team-leading 10 games.
Landon Frei had a 2-for-4 line with an RBI single, reaching base safely for the ninth consecutive game and hitting safely for the sixth straight.
TJ Clarkson walked twice and has now reached base in his last nine games.
Defensively, Gurney started at third base for the first time in his collegiate career and made back-to-back highlight plays during the sixth inning. With nobody out, Gurney snagged a line drive to the hot corner and quickly tagged third for an unassisted double play. On the next batter, he snared another line drive hit right at him, ending what was originally a nobody-out, bases-loaded threat.
Washington got on the board with a leadoff home run in the first inning, stretching the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the home half of the third.
The Utes found the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, beginning when
Elijha Hammill reached on an error to lead off the inning. He took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on
Jake Gish's groundout and scored when Frei hit a first-pitch single up the middle.
Looking to cut into what became a 4-1 deficit, Utah loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with a Frei single plus two walks. But Washington worked out of it without allowing a run, forcing a ground ball back to the mound to end the threat.
In the seventh Utah did get a run back in part thanks to Hammill.
Davis Cop led off with a base hit, moved into scoring position on a sac bunt and scored when Hammill put a single into left field.
Washington would add its final run of the night during the eighth inning.
Starter
Cam Day (2-2) received the loss for Utah, going five-plus and allowing four runs while striking out four.
