SEATTLE – Utah leveled the score at three-apiece in the ninth inning when
Davis Cop was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but Washington's Sam DeCarlo answered with a walk-off solo home run in the bottom half of the inning as the Utes fell, 4-3, on Saturday in the series middle game at Husky Ballpark.
Utah (6-8, 0-2 Pac-12) will wrap up its time in Seattle on Sunday, taking on the Huskies in a 1:05 p.m. MT first pitch.
Kai Roberts began the ninth-inning rally effort, entering the game as a pinch hitter and punching a single through the right side.
Kaden Carpenter then pinch ran for Roberts, before Utah loaded the bases on a
TJ Clarkson single and walk to
Jayden Kiernan.
Cameron Gurney then hit a chopper back to the mound, leading the Huskies to take the force out at the plate and leave Utah down to its final out trailing 3-2.
Davis Cop was next up, and appeared to be hit by the 2-2 pitch which would have brought Clarkson home from third. A lengthy discussion ensued as to whether Cop was hit by the pitch or fouled it off, before he was eventually awarded first base and bringing Clarkson to the plate with the tying run.
But before Utah could battle in extra innings, DeCarlo went yard with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
The Utes first got on the board with a pair of runs in the third inning.
Elijha Hammill laid down a sac bunt that scored
Dakota Duffalo, then
Bruer Webster scored in spite of a double play later in the inning.
Blake Whiting received the loss for Utah.
