SEATTLE – Freshman
Merit Jones (1-1) worked six-plus innings in his start, striking out four of Utah's 11 total as a pitching staff as the Utes closed their series at Washington with a 3-0 win on Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
Jones allowed five hits but he and
Bryson Van Sickle,
Zac McCleve and
Micah Ashman combined for zero walks in the win. Van Sickle dealt 0.2 innings in relief before McCleve came on for 2.0 innings of one-hit ball with a career-high five strikeouts. Ashman then closed the one-out save, his fourth of the season.
At the plate for the Utes,
TJ Clarkson hit his sixth home run of the season with a solo shot in the third inning.
Elijha Hammill also contributed an RBI double, his second of the year.
Cameron Gurney was hit by a pitch during the game, extending his reached base streak to a team-leading 12 straight games.
Utah (7-8, 1-2 Pac-12) put up a run in the first inning, aided by a few ground balls in the infield. After
Bruer Webster led off the ballgame beating out a throw from the Washington shortstop, he took second after dodging a tag from the second baseman on a grounder hit by Hammill. Next up was Clarkson, and on a would-be 5-4-3 double play, the throw to first got away allowing Webster to score.
In the top of the third Clarkson took the first pitch over the left-center field wall of Husky Ballpark between the flagpoles and light tower.
Then in the fifth, Utah added its third run of the game thanks to clutch two-out hitting.
Matt Flaharty worked a one-out walk, took second on a groundout then came around on Hammill's double for the 3-0 advantage.
A strength of not only the Utah pitching staff but also the defense, the Utes retired seven out of nine leadoff hitters in the game.
Dakota Duffalo came up with a highlight-reel catch, leaping into the center field wall and robbing Johnny Tincher of at least a double, and quite possibly a home run. It was also great to see Flaharty make his first collegiate start, getting the nod for at shortstop for Utah.
With the team's Spring Break trip now in the books, the Utes will return to Salt Lake City tonight and prepare for a Tuesday, March 14 game down at BYU. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT at Miller Park.
