SALT LAKE CITY – The regular-season in the backseat, the Utah men's basketball team now heads to Sin City for the opening round of the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament where the seventh-seeded Runnin' Utes face the 10th-seeded Stanford Cardinal on Wednesday, March 8, inside T-Mobile Arena.

Ted Robinson will have the call for fans alongside UCLA and NBA legend Bill Walton on Pac-12 Networks as Utah and Stanford battle it out for just the second time ever in the conference tournament and settle the in-season series after each team came away with the win on the road in league action.

Since joining the Pac-12, Utah has won five of its 11 opening round game at the Pac-12 Tournament with two of those instances (2015, 2016) occurring in the quarterfinal round after earning a by on the first day of action.Â

In the current Pac-12 era, only Colorado (2012), Oregon (2019) and Oregon State (2021) are the only teams to have won the tournament that wasn't a top-three seed. The top-seed has won four times (2015, 2016, 2018, 2022) while the No. 2 seed has won twice (2014, 2017) and the No. 3 seed taking the crown once (2013).

PLAYING THE ODDS
The No. 7 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament has gone a combined 7-11 in the Pac-12 Era – including an 0-2 mark in overtime games. Washington lost its first-round game to 10th-seeded Oregon State, 69-66, in 2018 while Utah went 1-1 as the No. 7 seed in 2021 after defeating the Huskies 98-95 before dropping a heartbreaker to second-seeded USC in double-overtime 91-85. The seventh-seeded teams have gone a total of 20-25 all-time in the conference's tournament history – including an 0-4 mark in overtime games and 0-2 when those games have gone into double overtime.

The Utes were able to have the services of
Gabe Madsen and
Rollie Worster in its regular-season finale at Colorado, but a tough afternoon shooting the ball saw Utah drop its fifth-straight game 69-60. Worster led the Utes in the scoring column his first game back, posting 15 points on an efficient 5-of-8 shooting to go with three rebounds, four assists and a career-high tying three steals.
Branden Carlson recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds while
Lazar Stefanovic chipped in with a dozen points and five assists. Madsen finished with nine points in his return to the line-up for the first time in five weeks.

Should the Utes win their first-round game against Stanford, Utah will square off against second-seeded Arizona on Thursday, March 9, at 7 p.m. (MT) / 6 p.m. (PT) local on Pac-12 Networks.
