LAS VEGAS – The seventh-seeded Utah men's basketball team saw its time in Las Vegas cut short Wednesday evening after dropping its first-round game in the Pac-12 Tournament against 10th-seeded Stanford, 73-62, inside T-Mobile Arena.
Stanford drew first blood in the battle between the Runnin' Utes and Cardinal on a jumper from Harrison Ingram, but
Branden Carlson answered for Utah with seven-straight points. The Cardinal then went up as much as 20-9 before a triple from
Gabe Madsen saw Utah head into the 10:26 media break down 20-12. Utah then went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead down to 22-20 at the 6:46 mark but Spencer Jones broke free for a 7-0 run of his own – which forced a Utah timeout with 4:48 on the clock.
Utah's offense hit a dry spell as it couldn't find the bottom of the basket managing only two field-goals in the final 7:06 minutes of action – both of which came from Carlson. The newly minted First-Team All-Pac-12 honoree did his best to keep the Utes within striking distance, 34-27, at the half with a team-high 14 points – including all of Utah's seven points during that stretch.
Utah's offensive woes carried over into the second frame with the Utes shooting just .231 from 3-point range as a team. Despite that, Utah was able to keep Stanford's (14-18) lead in the single-digits mid-way through the game until the Cardinal settled in and expanded its lead to double-digits. Utah did its best to not let that lead balloon but it was futile with time expiring.
Carlson's 27 points marked the 10th time this season the center has recorded 20-plus points in a game and the sixth double-double of his career after finishing with 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Madsen added 13 points for the Utes off the bench with
Lazar Stefanovic chipping in with 10 points and four assists.
