SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 19 University of Utah softball team erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning and turned a 4-3 deficit into a 10-4 win over the Weber State Wildcats on Tuesday evening at the Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
This makes three straight wins for the Utes, the fifth time in 2023 they've strung together at least three consecutive triumphs, and puts their record at 27-8. Weber State falls to 7-23.
"I'm proud of this team for finding a way to win today," said head coach
Amy Hogue. "Weber came out and earned the lead and it took us a while to break through. Mariah came in and shut them down while we started chipping away at some runs. It seems like we have been good for at least one big offensive inning and even though it came later than I would have liked today, we still got it done."
The Wildcats were the first team to dent home plate, scoring on a Lauren Hoe second-inning home run and, after
Kendall Lundberg tied the game with an RBI double, moving ahead 3-1 courtesy of a Faith Hoe homer in the third.
Utah found a way to knot the score thanks to a run-scoring error by WSU in the fourth and an RBI double from Bonstrom in the fifth, only to see the visitors retake the lead in the sixth when McKell McCuistion doubled in Lauren Hoe. That would be the last run of the day for the Wildcats, however.
Mariah Lopez, who entered in relief in the third, permitted just that one run on two hits in 4 2/3 innings and also struck out seven to collect her 12th win.
Patience was what set up the Utes' sixth inning outburst, as two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs and brought Bonstrom to the plate. Utah's first baseman ripped an 0-1 pitch into right-center and all three runners scampered home to give the Utes' their first lead of the day.
The rally continued when, after a walk to
Julia Jimenez,
Sophie Jacquez smacked a two-run double off the wall in center and she scored thanks to an
Emily Capobianco single.
Jordyn Gasper struck the final blow with an RBI triple that made the score 10-4 and Lopez did the rest in the circle to ice the win for Utah.
"The walks helped us put up the big numbers, so I was proud of those little discipline types of things that we did with our late push," said Hogue, "We are going to need that discipline this next series against Stanford, so I hope we can just keep that going."
