SALT LAKE CITY – It was another 20-goal performance for the University of Utah Lacrosse team today at Ute field as they beat the Mercer Bears 22-12. The Utes are now 8-4 overall and 7-0 in ASUN play.
With the 22 goals and 34 ground balls today, the Utes have set school records in single-season goals (202) and ground balls (451). Utah also tied the school record for single-game assists with 14, also notching 13 caused turnovers, which ranks second all-time.
The Utes outshot the Bears 56-39 which included 32 shots on goal. Utah was 23-of-25 on clears, finishing the game with just 13 turnovers compared to Mercer's 20, 13 of which the Utes caused.
GAME LEADERS
Junior
Jordan Hyde had another standout performance in today's game, scoring a school record eight goals, finishing with nine points (8 goals, 1 assist) to rank second all-time at Utah in single-game points. Redshirt freshman
Ryan Stines also chipped in a career-high eight points, scoring four goals and a career-best four assists.
Junior
Tyler Bradbury recorded two goals and two assists for four points with
MJ McMahon also adding two goals and an assist. From the faceoff, senior
Cole Brams was 17-of-35, also notching five ground balls and a goal.
On defense, freshman
Nikko DiPonio caused a career-high four turnovers, which is the second-most in a game in Utah history, adding three ground balls. Senior
Samuel Cambere also recorded three caused turnovers and two ground balls with
Joey Boylston leading the Utes with a career-high eight ground balls.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
It was a slow start for the Utes in the first quarter after the Bears jumped on the scoreboard first, taking an early lead with 12:35 on the clock. The Utes would answer with two straight goals from Hyde and
Koa Todd, but Mercer would tie the game once again with a goal at the 8:57 mark in the quarter.
Mercer would take its second lead of the game with 4:34 left to play, but it would be its last of the game as Utah went on to tie the game 3-3 with a goal from McMahon as time expired in the period. Freshman goalie
Colin Lenskold was able to keep the Bears at bay during the first quarter, finishing with four saves.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
Utah started the second quarter with back-to-back goals from Stines and Bradbury to take a two-point lead, but the Bears would cut things back down to one with a goal at the 12:02 mark. McMahon would find the back of the net for the second time in the game with 10:54 on the clock, sparking a 3-0 run by the Utes to take an 8-4 lead off goals from Hyde and Stines.
Mercer would sneak one in with 3:11 left in the quarter, but Utah would extend the lead back out to four points with six seconds remaining after Hyde punched in his third goal of the game for a 9-5 Utah lead at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
It was another third quarter scoring frenzy for the Utes as they started things off with a 7-0 run to take a 16-5 lead. The offense and defense were solid on both sides of the field with the Utes forcing four turnovers in the quarter while putting away 10 total goals.
Utah's 7-0 scoring streak included goals from Hyde,
Cody Hart,
Josh Rose, Stines,
Ruben Santana and Bradbury with Utah holding Mercer scoreless until the 2:41 mark in the quarter. Mercer was able to score three goals in the quarter, but it wouldn't be enough with the Utes finishing with goals from Brams and Hyde to take an 11-point lead into the final period.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
The Utes stumbled early in the fourth, allowing Mercer to make it an eight-point game before scoring their 20
th goal of the game at the 9:09 mark at the hands of Stines. Hyde went on to score his eighth and final goal with 6:19 on the clock, followed by Utah's final goal of the game from
Bryce Horton to secure the 22-12 victory.
