The First Pitch: Things to Know
It's the start of a five-game road swing for the Utah baseball team as the Utes trek down Interstate 15 for a Tuesday meeting at BYU. The game will be the second of three between the teams this season and begins at 6 p.m. MT from Miller Park.
- Utah is looking to get back in the win column after California took two of three from the Utes this past weekend at Smith's Ballpark.
- Despite the series loss, Cameron Gurney was 6-for-11 at the plate with two doubles and a home run, while TJ Clarkson racked up 11 total bases in part thanks to two doubles, a triple and a homer.
- Bryson Van Sickle was solid in his series-opening start last Friday, working seven innings of two-run ball with nine strikeouts; it was a career-high for Van Sickle and most by a Utah pitcher this season.
- Saturday's contest saw Micah Ashman close out his sixth save of the season. Ashman worked two innings on the way to his sixth save of the season—the most by a Ute since 2018 and most by a left-handed pitcher since 2016.
- Outfielder Kai Roberts has been picking it up with the bat recently. After his batting average sat at .149 following the UCLA series, Roberts proceeded to hit .400 last week and 6-for-13 with two doubles and five RBI in the series against Cal. It improved Roberts' clip by more than 50 points from a week ago.
- BYU took the first meeting of the season between these teams by a 7-0 score back on March 14. TJ Clarkson had the lone hit of the game for the Utes, legging out an infield single during the top of the sixth inning.
- The Utes and Cougars will rematch one final time on May 9 up in Salt Lake City.
- A win Tuesday night for Utah would avoid back-to-back losses against the Cougars as the Utes earned a 12-7 win in Provo on May 17, 2022. Four different Utes had multi-hit performances in that game, including three for TJ Clarkson and two for Kai Roberts.
- Following the BYU game, the Utes will get ready to resume Pac-12 Conference play down at Arizona from April 21-23.
