The First Pitch: Things to Know
A three-game series with Arizona is next for the Utah baseball team as the Utes travel down to Tucson and Hi Corbett Field from Friday through Sunday. Utah has four Pac-12 Conference series remaining and all four are key for the ballclub in getting back in the hunt to reach the Pac-12 Tournament in May.
- The Utes are looking to ride the offensive wave that the club enjoyed in a wild 29-14 win at BYU on Tuesday night. The run total was a Pac-12 era program record for Utah and just three from tying the all-time high for the Utes, while both the 29 runs and 43 combined between the teams both reset facility records for BYU's Miller Park.
- TJ Clarkson scored six runs and walked five times, both tying single-game records at Utah. Jayden Kiernan was 4-for-6 with his first career grand slam, finishing with seven RBI. Davis Cop also drove in seven runs, five of which came via his two homers. All told, the Utes had nine extra base hits (five HR, three doubles and a triple) and drew 13 walks.
- Seven Utes had multi-hit performances, with Kiernan and Bruer Webster (4-for-7) leading the way. Karson Bodily was 3-for-6 including a triple. Matt Flaharty clubbed his first home run as a Ute to lead off the sixth inning as well.
- Perhaps one of the crazier moments in the game was to see Utah held without a hit until the fourth inning, yet lead 6-1 after two frames. In another odd twist, BYU would rally to take a 7-6 lead after four innings, before the Utes hung an eight-spot in the fifth and never looked back.
- Utah took two of three in last year's weekend with then-No. 20 Arizona up at Smith's Ballpark. Jayden Kiernan was 7-for-12 in the series with five RBI, while Zac McCleve pitched in all three games and surrendered just two hits in 5.2 innings of work.
- McCleve inherited the bases loaded and one out in the rubber game last year, with Utah hanging on to an 8-4 lead in the sixth inning. He quickly induced a pop up and groundout to exit unharmed and pitched the rest of the ballgame to secure the save in an eventual 11-4 win.
- The Utes' last victory in Tucson came in a 21-10 decision in a series opener on March 15, 2019. The club's last road series win over Arizona came in 2017 with a sweep over the then-No. 7 ranked Wildcats.
- Once back from Tucson, the Utes will prepare for a Tuesday, April 25 voyage down to St. George, Utah, and a meeting with Utah Tech.
