The First Pitch: Things to Know
It's a Tuesday trip for the Utah baseball team down Interstate 15 to St. George, as the Utes meet in-state foe Utah Tech at Bruce Hurst Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+.
- This will be the only meeting of Utah and the Trailblazers this regular season; the clubs were scheduled to play on April 4 at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City but the game was cancelled and not rescheduled due to inclement weather.
- Utah is looking to right the ship after being on the receiving end of a sweep last weekend at Arizona. Landon Frei and Davis Cop each hit .400 or above in the series to pace the Utes at the plate, and TJ Clarkson contributed four doubles, but Arizona turned the tables its way with strings of big innings throughout the weekend.
- A win Tuesday would be the second straight midweek triumph for the Utes, who claimed a wild 29-14 game at BYU last Tuesday night. The run total was a Pac-12 era program record for Utah and just three from tying the all-time high for the Utes, while both the 29 runs and 43 combined between the teams both reset facility records for BYU's Miller Park.
- It'll also be a homecoming of sorts for Frei, who grew up in Santa Clara, Utah--less than seven miles from Bruce Hurst Field.
- TJ Clarkson scored six runs in the BYU game and walked five times, both tying single-game records at Utah. Jayden Kiernan was 4-for-6 with his first career grand slam, finishing with seven RBI. Davis Cop also drove in seven runs, five of which came via his two homers. All told, the Utes had nine extra base hits (five HR, three doubles and a triple) and drew 13 walks.
- Seven Utes had multi-hit performances, with Kiernan and Bruer Webster (4-for-7) leading the way. Karson Bodily was 3-for-6 including a triple. Matt Flaharty clubbed his first home run as a Ute to lead off the sixth inning as well.
- Perhaps one of the crazier moments in the game was to see Utah held without a hit until the fourth inning, yet lead 6-1 after two frames. In another odd twist, BYU would rally to take a 7-6 lead after four innings, before the Utes hung an eight-spot in the fifth and never looked back.
- Last year's pair of games between Utah and Utah Tech ended up a split with the home team winning each game. Kai Roberts had three hits and five RBI in a commanding 12-1 win for the Utes in Salt Lake City to highlight four players with three-hit games, but the momentum could not carry over to the road trip in a 9-4 loss.
- Pac-12 Conference play resumes for Utah on Friday, April 28 in the opener of a three-game series vs. Washington State at Smith's Ballpark.
