SALT LAKE CITY –
Kai Roberts' single put the tying run on in the ninth inning, but he was ultimately stranded in scoring position after a 45-minute weather delay as the Utah baseball team fell to Cal Poly in a 9-8 ballgame on Saturday at Smith's Ballpark.
The loss sets up a Senior Day rubber game on Sunday between Utah and the Mustangs, with first pitch coming at 1 p.m. MT. Utah will recognize its four-man Class of 2023 prior to the contest, including
Jayden Kiernan,
Zac McCleve,
Blake Whiting and student assistant coach
Gabe Singer. In addition, several Mother's Day elements are planned to celebrate the occasion.
Karson Bodily (4-for-4) had his first four-hit game as a Ute, scoring three times and finishing a home run short of the cycle. Kiernan hit a two-run homer to eclipse 100 RBI in his career, while
Landon Frei drove in a pair of runs as well. Roberts,
Davis Cop and Frei all were 2-for-4.
McCleve pitched the final four innings for Utah after inheriting men on second and third with nobody out in the sixth. The right-handed submariner retired all 12 batters he faced, striking out five.
The first big momentum shift came in the fourth inning when Utah batted around and pushed across six runs.
TJ Clarkson followed Cop's leadoff single with a triple to the gap in right center, then Kiernan had the green light on 3-0 and went yard onto the berm in left field. Bodily and Frei capped the string of five straight hits with doubles, then the Utes jumped on a Cal Poly error for another run. Roberts wrapped up the offense for the inning with a single to score
Jake Gish and give the Utes a 6-2 lead.
Cal Poly pulled back to 6-4 in the top of the fifth, but another Frei base hit aided by an error allowed Bodily to score and move the Utah advantage to 7-4 after five full innings.
Things turned in the sixth when the Mustangs hung a five-spot. McCleve came on in a pressure situation with runners at second and third and nobody out, but worked through with a strikeout and two groundouts—allowing just one inherited runner to score.
Bodily led off the eighth on a triple that was a tough play for the Mustangs' right fielder, scoring on a Frei groundout.
After McCleve sat down the Mustangs in order in the ninth, Roberts battled through a seven-pitch at bat for a single to put the tying run on base. At that point, the game entered a delay due to lightning in the area. When play resumed 45 minutes later, Cop walked on four pitches to put the tying run at second and winning run at first, but a strikeout and fielder's choice brought the ballgame to a finish.
Kiernan hit safely for the 11
th straight game and reached base for a team-leading 31
st consecutive contest. Clarkson also now owns an on-base streak of 22 straight games.
Jaden Harris received the loss on the mound for Utah.
