This Week's Fan Experience Rundown
Prime baseball weather is in the forecast for Salt Lake City the next several days, so be sure to come on out and catch the Utes over Senior Weekend and the penultimate series of the 2023 regular season.
- Fans will have another chance to meet the Utes on Friday night for postgame autographs. Then on Saturday, everyone is encouraged to bring their baseball gloves and a ball to participate in a post-game catch in the outfield.
- Sunday's game is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch, but be sure to come early as Utah will celebrate its Class of 2023 in a pregame ceremony. The group includes Jayden Kiernan, Zac McCleve, Blake Whiting and student assistant coach Gabe Singer.
- With Mother's Day also falling on Sunday, the first 100 mothers to enter the ballpark will receive a rose and a Utah Utes varsity tee. A variety of additional programming is slated to celebrate the special day and recognize the Moms out there.
The First Pitch: Things to Know
Utah hosts Cal Poly for a three-game, non-conference series this weekend at Smith's Ballpark. Seven games remain for the Utes in the regular season, six of which are slated to be played in Salt Lake City.
- It's been a while since these teams have met; not since the opening weekend of 2002 have the Utes and Mustangs crossed paths on the diamond. Utah won the series (and regular season) opener by a 6-4 score, but Tim Esmay's squad was topped in the final two contests. Utah went on to finish that season second in the Mountain West and Nate Weese capped off his career holding program records in home runs (50) and RBI (218).
- The Utes get ready for the Mustangs after splitting a pair of midweek games against BYU and New Mexico State. Utah led BYU by a 7-3 score on Tuesday, but the Cougars put together a late push to rally and take the contest, 13-7.
- On Wednesday the Utes responded with a 7-6 walk-off victory over New Mexico State in 10 innings. Kai Roberts capped off a four-RBI night with a bloop single to center field, scoring Matt Flaharty with the winning run. Kaden Carpenter also had a solo home run in a late-inning rally for Utah.
- Jayden Kiernan enters the weekend with a team-leading .412 batting average. It ranks second in the Pac-12 and 17th nationally of all players meeting the NCAA's minimum plate appearances and games played.
- Kiernan's on base percentage (.474) sits seventh-highest in the league, in part helping him stand as the third-toughest batter to strikeout in the Pac-12.
- Southpaw Micah Ashman remains atop the Pac-12 with nine saves on the season. It puts Ashman 14th in the country and makes him the first Utah pitcher since 2016 to log nine saves.
- Utah won its only other game this season against Big West competition; taking a 3-2 decision at Cal State Fullerton back on March 7. The Utes trekked to CSU Bakersfield during the 2022 season and took three of four from the Roadrunners, while UC Davis was the most recent team in the league to visit Smith's Ballpark—Utah closed the 2019 season with two wins against the Aggies.
- Following the weekend series, Utah will gear up for a Tuesday matchup at Utah Valley with first pitch at 6:05 p.m. inside UCCU Ballpark in Orem.
