SALT LAKE CITY – Utah's
Jayden Kiernan was 3-for-6 with three RBI as Kiernan recorded his 200
th collegiate hit and the Utes earned an 18-6 victory over Cal Poly in the series opener on Friday night at Smith's Ballpark.
Everyone to bat for Utah combined for a season-best 22 hits for the team, with six multi-hit performances and five different Utes with three hits. Kiernan drove in a run on each of his three singles and boosted his season batting average to .415. He has hit safely in 10 straight games and reached base in his last 30 games played.
Leadoff man
Kai Roberts was 3-for-5, doubled twice, scored three runs and tied a career-high with five RBI. Returning to the lineup,
Davis Cop (3-for-6) was a triple short of the cycle, tying a career-best with four runs scored and driving in three runs. Alongside Cop,
Jake Gish clubbed his third home run of the season and scored three times.
Dakota Duffalo rounded out the extra-base hits for Utah with a triple in the fifth inning.
Lefty
Bryson Van Sickle worked a six-inning start on the way to the win, striking out seven and walking just one batter.
Bransen Kuehl came on for the seventh and took the Utes home from there, earning a save.
Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Utes' bats heated up in the third and put up crooked numbers in four straight frames. Among the outpouring of runs, Gish led off the fourth with a first-pitch homer that was clocked at 448 feet.
Then in the fifth, Duffalo sent a 3-1 pitch off the wall in right center for a triple, scoring when the relay throw from the outfield got away. Two more doubles and a Kiernan single gave Utah a 12-2 lead after five innings of play. The Mustangs plated a pair in the sixth, only for the Utes to answer with a four-spot and carry a 16-4 advantage.
The teams traded runs in both the seventh and eighth, capped off with Cop going opposite field on the first pitch in the eighth inning. The crowd sat quiet watching to see if the ball would land fair or foul, then erupted in cheers when it clanked off the right field foul pole for Cop's 10
th home run of the season.
Kuehl then posted a 1-2-3 ninth inning to bring the ballgame to a close and secure the victory for Utah.
The teams will return to Smith's Ballpark on Saturday for the middle game of the three-game set, with first pitch at 2 p.m. MT. Fans are encouraged to bring their baseball gloves and a ball as everyone will be invited to the outfield postgame to play catch.
