SALT LAKE CITY –
Jayden Kiernan was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored—raising his batting average to a Pac-12-leading .411—but Cal Poly snuck ahead with a two-run double in the ninth to take a 6-4 final from Utah on Sunday in the rubber game at Smith's Ballpark.
To mark Senior Day, prior to the game the Utah baseball program recognized its four-man Class of 2023. It includes Kiernan,
Zac McCleve,
Blake Whiting and student assistant coach
Gabe Singer.
Kiernan's multi-hit performance was his team-leading 24
th of the season and extended both his hitting (12) and on-base streaks (32).
Matt Flaharty had two RBI via a sixth-inning single.
TJ Clarkson also drove in a run.
Kai Roberts added his 10
th double of the season and Kiernan's was his ninth of the year.
Cal Poly struck early with three runs in the first inning, before Utah narrowed the deficit to 3-2 in the third inning. A wild pitch allowed
Elijha Hammill to come home with a run, then soon after Clarkson grounded out to score Roberts.
The Mustangs plated one more run in the sixth but Utah tied the score at four during the home half of the sixth. Kiernan led off with a double and took third on a wild pitch that happened to put
Dakota Duffalo on base with ball four. Duffalo swiped second base, setting the stage for Flaharty's base hit through the middle infield to bring in two and level the score.
Along the way, Utah looked primed for more with runners at second and third both in the second and fifth innings, but Cal Poly worked out of the threats.
Both teams were retired 1-2-3 in the seventh and eighth, sending the game to the ninth inning in a 4-4 tie. After two walks for the Mustangs, Aaron Casillas drove an 0-2 pitch all the way to the wall in right field for a two-run double.
Utah has a four-game week to close out the regular season, beginning with a trip to Orem on Tuesday for a 6:05 p.m. MT game at Utah Valley.
