The First Pitch: Things to Know
The final week of the regular season has arrived for the Utah baseball team, and while the Utes are not back at Smith's Ballpark until Thursday, head coach
Gary Henderson's club will stay close to home on Tuesday with a short trip to Orem and a meeting with Utah Valley. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. MT inside UCCU Ballpark.
- It'll be the rubber game of the three-game season series with the Wolverines, after the teams split a home-and-home on April 10 and 11. The Utes claimed a 10-8 decision in Salt Lake City on April 10, thanks in part to a shutdown bullpen effort from Cam Day and Zac McCleve, but the momentum shifted to UVU late in the rematch as Utah fell by a 6-5 score in Orem.
- Karson Bodily went 5-for-5 during the first two games, including three extra-base hits by way of two doubles and a home run. In the series opener at Smith's Ballpark, Day and McCleve combined to pitch the last four innings and allow just one hit and one walk. Day ended up the winning pitcher and McCleve earned another save toward his career total of 12.
- Jayden Kiernan enters the final week of the regular season with a Pac-12-leading .411 batting average, which ranks 17th in the country. His success at the plate has helped Kiernan string together a 32-game on-base streak and 12-game hitting streak. In Pac-12 play, Kiernan is batting .415 which ranks second in the league.
- Left-hander and Sandy, Utah, native Micah Ashman has also entered the national conversation recently as an addition to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List. Ashman's nine saves on the season are tied for the Pac-12 lead and are in the top-20 nationally.
- Utah is looking to start the week on a high note after wrapping its series vs. Cal Poly with two tough setbacks. The Utes' bats went off for 18 runs and 22 hits in last Friday's series opener, but on Saturday the club was unable to get the tying run home from second base in a 9-8 loss. In Sunday's rubber game Cal Poly broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth inning, using a two-run double that Utah was unable to erase in the bottom of the ninth.
- Following Tuesday's meeting with the Wolverines, the Utes will prepare for a three-game set at home vs. Oregon. The series runs from Thursday through Saturday, May 18-20, with first pitch at 6:30 p.m. MT on Thursday and 11 a.m. MT both on Friday and Saturday.
