Utes to play No. 6 Oklahoma State in elimination game at 8:30 p.m. CT
Utah must now wait until 8:30 p.m. CT (7:30 p.m. MT) on Friday, when they'll face Oklahoma State in an elimination game.
"Although we didn't play the way we wanted to today, they fought their guts out," said head coach Amy Hogue. "This one sitting next to me was the leader of that, Mariah (Lopez). Really proud of what she did in the circle today."
The Utes were the first team on the scoreboard, breaking the ice in the top of second when a Haley Denning double was followed by a two-bagger courtesy of Kendall Lundberg, chasing Denning home for a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for the Utes, the Huskies immediately answered in their half of the second, when a two-out walk brought Rylee Holtorf to the plate, and she drove a go-ahead, two-run homer over the left field wall to put Washington in front, 2-1.
The Utes had and opportunity to erase their deficit in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs, but a popout ended that threat. It extended a scoring drought for the Utes that saw them strand eight base runners through the first four innings, and nine total for the game.
"I don't think they felt tight," Hogue said. "I think they just tried a little hard. They actually were really calm. We drew those walks. That's hard for us. We normally don't walk. I think they were calm enough. But when they had the opportunity to bang somebody in, they tried a little hard. They were a little early, a little under it, just missed. I think if they were nervous, then they would have stood there a whole lot more or swung at balls, but they didn't."
The Huskies added to their lead with one run in their half of the fourth and another in the sixth. Utah came to bat in the top of the seventh trailing 4-1, and went down in order to end the game.Utah will be fighting to extend its magical season when it faces Oklahoma State Friday evening.
"We're just going to take our fight," said catcher Kendall Lundberg. "Honestly, no team is better than us at fighting back. I think that's all we got to do."
"I think just going out confident again, and working from there," added starting pitcher Mariah Lopez. "We know what we need to do to win this game."
