SALT LAKE CITY –
Samuel Hendry of the Utah Ski Team was recognized on Wednesday with placement on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America First Team. It is Hendry's second career CSC Academic All-America honor; he was voted to the Second Team in 2022.
In recorded program history, Hendry is just the third student-athlete and first male to earn back-to-back Academic All-America honors. Previously Eva Huckova (2010, '11) and Julie Mohagen (2018, '19) accomplished the feat on the women's side.
Capping the season as part of Utah's fourth straight NCAA team championship, Hendry was named an NCAA First Team All-American after a fourth-place finish in the men's 20K classic race at the 2023 NCAA Championships. It was his fifth career NCAA All-America nod. Hendry was lauded with All-RMISA First Team in 2023 after skiing to five podiums, including a victory. He also completed the international seven-stage Tour de Ski in January 2023.
The Canmore, Alberta, native graduated in May with his degree in biology and an impressive 3.97 grade-point average.
CSC's Academic All-America awards are prestigious in all sports, but to earn it in skiing—much less do it twice—is particularly special and is more difficult. Many sports have their own CSC Academic All-America category specific to that sport; skiing falls into the at-large category which is shared on the men's side with fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
CSC is expected to announce members of the Academic All-America At Large Women's Team later this week.
