Hogue piloted the Utes to the Women’s College World Series for the first time since 1994
SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Head Softball Coach Amy Hogue has signed a contract extension through June of 2028, Director of Athletics Mark Harlan announced on Monday. Hogue is fresh off guiding her Utes to a Pac-12 Tournament Championship during the 2023 campaign, as well as the program's first Women's College World Series appearance since 1994.
"Coming off such a memorable and historic season by our softball program, I'm excited to announce a contract extension for Amy Hogue," said Mark Harlan, Director of Athletics. "The tremendous leadership she has provided over her 16 years as head coach reached new heights in 2023, and I'm thrilled that the all-time winningest coach in program history will continue to build on that record coaching at her alma mater."
The former All-American and Utah Athletics Hall of Fame member is preparing for her 17th season at the helm of Utah Softball, holding an overall record of 440-393, making her the winningest coach in program history. She also logged the 600th victory of her coaching career in 2023.
"I want to start by saying how thankful I am to have the support of President Randall, Mark Harlan, and Charmelle Green in continuing to lead this program," said Hogue. "This is my dream job and it always has been. I've loved all that comes along with the role of head coach, and to have a chance to lead these amazing young women at my alma mater for another five years is an absolute honor. "The excitement surrounding the team and the successes that we were able to share with the department and the community this past season have been absolutely phenomenal. I look forward to building on that excitement and continuing the journey with these student athletes and their pursuit of excellence in the years to come."
Hogue's 2023 Utes rolled up 42 victories, the fourth-highest total in school history, posted the program's third-best win percentage and piled up 15 wins in Pac-12 play, the most they've achieved since joining the conference in 2012. Hogue also saw eight of her pupils selected for all-conference and all-region honors, the most in program history for a single season, and Ellessa Bonstrom and Mariah Lopez were both named All-Americans.
In addition to being the winningest coach in program history, Hogue is Utah's longest tenured softball coach as well, having taken over in 2008. Since then, she's coached more than 50 all-conference performers and over 30 players who were named all-region. Three of her student-athletes have been named All-Americans and she's also helped the Utes rise as high as No. 7 in the national rankings.
Hogue was officially named Utah's head softball coach on May 24, 2007 after spending five seasons putting together a 197-82 record at Salt Lake Community College. The pinnacle of her tenure at SLCC came in 2004 when the team earned a regional championship and placed sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. In 2000, the Bruins' inaugural campaign, they won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title and repeated as champions again in 2003.
Hogue got her start in coaching as a graduate assistant for the Utes in 1994-95 before spending time as an assistant coach for the program from 1996-99, while also serving as an assistant coach at Alta High School from 1994-96.
Hogue began coaching after putting together a phenomenal career on the diamond for the Utes. From 1991-94, she helped Utah win two conference titles, two conference tournaments and two regional titles in making a pair of Women's College World Series appearances. She captained the 1994 squad that tallied a school-record 51 wins and led both the 1991 and 1994 teams to the College World Series.
She earned Second-Team All-American honors as a senior, batting .455 with 101 hits in 222 at bats and 55 runs scored. The batting average and hits marks still stand as the Utah single-season records. Hogue was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first team all-region and second team All-America in 1994. She was a three-time All-WAC player and was the team MVP in 1994.
Hogue graduated from Utah in 1994 with a sociology degree and earned a Masters from Utah in social work in 1996. She was inducted into the Utah Athletics Hall of Fame with the Class of 2020 in a banquet ceremony held at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Sept. 1, 2021.
