SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head men's basketball coach
Craig Smith announced the promotion of
Tramel Barnes to assistant coach on Wednesday.
"We're excited to announce that
Tramel Barnes has been elevated to an assistant coach role within our program," Smith said. "Tramel is a very bright coach with tireless energy that relates to people at a very high level. He is an excellent recruiter with a great eye for talent. There is no doubt he will elevate our program in a major way. Tramel also approaches everything he does one way – with excellence!"
Barnes originally joined the Runnin' Utes as the director of player personnel back in May of 2021 and will enter his third season on the Hill in 2023-24 – his first as an assistant coach.
"I want to thank Coach Smith and our administration for this opportunity," Barnes said. "My wife and I have truly enjoyed making Salt Lake City our home. I look forward to working with our staff as we continue to build onto the great Runnin' Utes tradition."
No stranger to the role, Barnes previously served as an assistant coach at South Dakota State (2019-21) before joining Smith's staff. During his time in Brookings, the Jackrabbits won the Summit League regular-season championship on top of coaching a pair of all-league players. He was also named to Silver Waves Media's Top-50 Impactful Mid-Major Assistants during his time at SDSU.
Barnes' first post under Smith came during the 2018-19 season at Utah State, where he served as the director of basketball operations and player development. His first year in Logan saw the Aggies win the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles as well as an NCAA Tournament berth. The NABC recognized Barnes for his efforts and named him to the 2019 Under Armour 30-Under-30 Team.
Prior to joining Smith's staff at Utah State, Barnes spent six seasons at Southwest Minnesota State and gradually moved up the ladder to become the top assistant after starting out as a graduate assistant. While with the Mustangs, Barnes led them to a South Division Championship in the NSIC back-to-back years while going 53-15 in those two seasons – including a record-tying 28 victories in 2016-17. In total, Barnes saw six players reach all-conference status while 24 earned academic all-league honors during his time at SMSU.
