LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 21 Utah Volleyball team closed out its inaugural trip to the Sunflower State as a member of the Big 12, falling to the No. 9 Kansas Jayhawks, 0-3 (16-25, 21-25, 22-25). This meeting with the Jayhawks was Utah's fifth top-25 conference contest since Big 12 action began.
Â
Utah came out of the gates slowly, falling behind early 10-5, as Kansas posted a seven-point scoring run to get the action started. The Utes fought back from a four-point deficit at the midway point, trailing 15-11. The Jayhawks sparked a five-point run to extend the advantage to 20-11. The two sides continued to exchange points before the home side finished out the first set with a 25-16 win.
Â
The Utes kept it close throughout the early stages before Kansas put together its first four-point run, taking an 11-6 lead. Utah climbed back to within one, getting three consecutive kills from
Kamryn Gibadlo, trailing 13-12. Battling back and forth, Utah was unable to string more than two consecutive points together down the stretch, before Kansas sealed the second set, 25-21.
Â
Utah would not go down without a fight in the third set, trailing by as many as eight points, 20-12. The Utes chipped away at the Kansas lead, taking advantage of some Jayhawk miscues and getting kills from Gibadlo and
Kamry Bailey to make it a 20-15 game. Utah kept the pressure on putting together a three-point run, using more Kansas errors to its advantage with a
Lauren Jardine kill to provide an offensive spark to make it 22-19 in the set. Bailey provided one final push for the Utah offense, bringing the serve back to the Utes coming off her kill and then serving up an ace for their final point, as the Utes dropped the set 25-22.
