SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team cruised past Mississippi Valley State 94-48 Tuesday night inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center to open the Mountain to Sea Showcase.
Big man
Lawson Lovering didn't waste any time in his season debut against the Delta Devils, scoring on a two-handed jam from
Gabe Madsen with authority just 11 seconds into the game. MVSU kept things close early on, but it didn't last long as the Runnin' Utes broke the game open out of the 14:01 media break with a 17-0 blitzkrieg before closing the half out on top 50-21.
Utah (5-1) played great team-ball in the opening frame, assisting on 15 of its 18 shots attempted while hitting 8-of-15 from the perimeter and shot 62.1-percent from the floor.
The second-half was much like the first with both teams feeling each other out before the Runnin' Utes punched Mississippi Valley State (1-6) with an 18-0 run to break it open more for the 89-35 edge – their largest lead of the game.
Madsen finished with a game-high 27 points on 7-of-10 shooting from 3-point range with 3 boards and 3 assists.
Miro Little finished with a new career-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The Finnish native has now dished out five-plus assists in five of the six games so far this season.
Lovering closed out the night with 12 points in just over 12 minutes of action with 7 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass, in his season debut.
Ezra Ausar was efficient on the floor tonight for Utah as well, going 3-for-3 from the floor and 3-of-5 from the line for 9 points in just 19 minutes of action.
