SALT LAKE CITY –  The 17
th-ranked Utah Volleyball team completed a magical season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to the Marquette University Golden Eagles in a tough five-set battle, 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 12-15). This was the eighth time Utah has played a five-set match in postseason history, as the Utes are 4-4 all-time in five-set battles in the postseason. Utah made its 19
th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, with each appearance coming under the guidance of head coach
Beth Launiere and this was the 15
th time she has guided Utah to the second round of action. Utah sends off an impactful senior class, consisting of graduate seniors
Claranne Fechter and
Rianne Vos, fifth-year seniors
Allie Olsen,
Vanessa Ramirez and
Amelia Van Der Werff, along with traditional seniors,
Kamry Bailey,
Grace Hammond and
Lauren Jardine with a final record of 25-6 overall.

Utah was the first to strike in the opening set, as
Emrie Satuala ignited the Huntsman with the first kill of the match. The Utes gave up their first lead of the tournament, with the Golden Eagles taking a 7-6 advantage before
Lauren Jardine evened the score at 7-7. The two sides continued to exchange points through the early going, before Marquette pulled away with a three-point lead, 12-9.
Rianne Vos stopped the Marquette run with her third kills of the set to cut the deficit down to two. Utah remained in the chase, trailing the Golden Eagles, 15-14 at the media timeout. The Utes continued to battle, as
Kamry Bailey dunked the free ball on the Marquette side of the net to tie the score at 20-20. Utah would come up with a big block from Satuala and Vos, regaining the lead at 21-20 before forcing the final Marquette timeout of the set with a two-point advantage, 22-20. Marquette battled back to take the first set, 25-23.

Marquette jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second set, forcing Utah to take its first timeout of the set. Utah used a Marquette attack error before getting a big block from Gibadlo and Olsen to help cut the Golden Eagle advantage in half, 6-3. Utah found a spark, rattling off three consecutive points to make it a one-point game at 11-10. Fighting back, Utah captured its first lead of the set, 16-15, getting a timely kill from Gibadlo. The resilient Utes never relented, seeing their largest lead of the set at 18-16. The Utah lead wouldn't last long, as Marquette battled back to even the score at 18-18. The comeback would not be enough in the second set, as Marquette took a 2-0 set lead with a 25-22 win.

Satuala smashed the first kill of the third set, giving Utah an early lead. The momentum started to swing back in Utah's favor, as the Utes found a 6-3 advantage through the early stages of set three. The two sides continued to exchanging points, as the scoreboard briefly flashed a 10-10 tie score, before Utah was able to take a three-point lead and force the Marquette timeout, 13-10. Utah kept the pressure on at the midway point, as the two sides continued to exchange blows before the Utes took an 18-16 lead with
Kamry Bailey back at the service line. Utah won the race to 20, keeping its postseason dreams alive by taking set three, 25-18.

Utah jumped out to an early 6-4 lead in the fourth set, before Marquette rattled off four points in a row to take an 8-4 advantage. Satuala provided a clutch block for the Utah defense to help even the score at 11-11, leading to a powerful Jardine kill to give the Utes the 12-11 lead. The two sides continued to battle as the score kept flipping changing leaders. Trailing 23-19, Utah battled back to score five consecutive points and even the score 24-24. With
Claranne Fechter back to serve, the Utes took the final point, forcing a fifth set and securing the fourth set win, 26-24.

For the fifth time this season, the Utes headed to a fifth-set battle and for just the second time on their home floor from the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The back-and-forth battle continued until the final five points of the match, as the two sides exchanged blows until Marquette found some separation at the changeover to take the 15-12 win.

- Emrie Satuala matched her season and career-high block total (11) previously set against Utah State. She comes up two blocks shy of tying the Utah five-set rally-scoring record of 13.
