FIRST SERVE
After a triumphant 4-2 victory over rival BYU last Friday, Utah will kick off the weekend in Colo. with a 1 p.m. match against the Denver Pioneers on Friday Feb. 16. The Utes are then set to host the Colorado State Rams on home courts Sunday Feb. 18.Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Utes took down BYU, topping their rivals from down south 4-2 on Friday Feb. 9. Utah fell in doubles, allowing the Cougars the doubles point advantage, but gained momentum in singles.Â
Sara Akid collected the first win for the Utes, topping her opponent 6-2, 6-4. Next to finish was Marcela Lopez, who battled hard in the No. 1 spot, but fell to her opponent 6-3, 7-5 giving BYU a 201 lead.Â
On the fourth court, Kat Lyman grabbed the next Ute victory to equalize the score to 2-2, winning 6-1, 7-5. Maintaining momentum, Kaila Barksdale defeated her opponent in a tiebreak 6-3, 7-6 (3) and put Utah in the lead, while Yuhan Liu clinched the match victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win on the third court.Â
IN THE RANKS
Utah's
Marcela Lopez is ranked No. 59 in the country after posting a 3-1 record so far on the season. In the fall she claimed a runner-up title at the ITA Regionals and made an ITA Championship appearance where she picked up two wins in consolation play.Â

HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women's tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 49-43 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera's leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Highlights included their inaugural win against Cal and a remarkable triumph over No. 16 Washington, marking their highest-ranked victory in the Pac-12 era. Also during the 2023 season, Mortera led the Utes to the most Pac-12 wins since 2015. In the Fall 2023 slate, Mortera's squad found success in the ITA Regionals, with
Emma Kamper staking claim to the singles B draw and
Marcela Lopez claiming second in the singles main draw, sending her to nationals.
SCOUTING DENVER
Denver holds a 6-2 record in 2024 so far and are coming off a four-match win streak after taking down Kansas State, Iowa, Portland, and Oregon. The Utes have met with the Pioneers on 18 accounts, with Denver holding an 11-7 edge. The two programs last competed in February of 2023 where Utah claimed a 5-2 victory over Denver.Â
SCOUTING COLORADO STATE
Colorado State currently sits at 3-1 in 2024, beating Abilene Christian and Missouri during their last two outings. The Utes have eight past encounters and remain undefeated against the Rams. Utah last faced Colorado State in April of 2011, claiming a 6-1 victory on home courts.Â
NEXT UP
The Utes will next hit the road to Memphis for two away matches against Minnesota and Memphis, taking on the Golden Gophers Feb. 24 and the Tigers Feb. 25.Â
