PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Despite
Aliya Belarde blasting Utah's first home run of the season in game one and a stellar pitching performance by
Mariah Lopez in game two, the No. 13 University of Utah softball team suffered two defeats on Thursday at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge at Nancy Almaraz Field, losing to No. 20 South Carolina, 9-1, and No. 25 Auburn, 1-0.
These two defeats drop Utah's 2024 record to 4-3.
Utah vs. South Carolina
The Gamecocks were the first team on the board, thanks to a solo homer in the first inning and they added one more in the third, courtesy of an Aniyah Black RBI single.
The Utes were able to get a run back in the fourth, when Belarde whacked a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right to slice the deficit in half. This counted for Utah's first long ball of 2024.
Unfortunately for the Utes, the Gamecocks continued adding to their margin, tacking on a single run in the fifth before a six-run outburst in the sixth brought the game to an end.
Utah vs. Auburn
For seven innings, Lopez dueled with Maddie Penta and both hurlers refused to budge, escaping multiple jams while the contest stayed scoreless.
In each of the first two frames, the Tigers put two runners on with nobody out, but in both instances Lopez induced a ground ball to Belarde, who started a double play to help squash those scoring chances. Utah put multiple runners on in the third and the fourth, but were unable to find the hit to produce the go-ahead tally.
The sixth inning produced another opportunity for the Tigers, who again put their first two hitters on. After a sacrifice moved both runners along,
Karlie Davison threw out a runner trying to score on a ground ball for the second out and a flyball to
Haley Denning in left ended the frame. The seventh inning is when Auburn found the run it needed to take the win, however, using three walks and a hit to put up the game's only run.
