LAST TIME OUT
Utah claimed their fourth sweep of the season against Colorado State last Sunday. Starting strong in doubles,
Sara Akid and
Kaila Barksdale claimed the first victory for the Utes, topping their opponents 6-3.
Kat Lyman and
Samantha Horwood then clinched the doubles point advantage with a 6-4 win on the second court. Cleaning up the doubles matches, Utah duo

Ana Luiza Cruz battled in a close tiebreak, walking away with a 7-6 (9) victory.
Retaining traction in singles, Lyman grabbed a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory on the fourth court. Next to finish was Akid who defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2 in the sixth spot. Barksdale followed up, grabbing a 6-3, 6-2 win to clinch the match victory for the Utes.
In the No. 3 spot, Yuhan Liu collected a 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 win over her opponent, while Lopez battled in a full three-set match, winning 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Emma Kamper drove it home for Utah on court five, claiming a 7-5, 7-5 victory to close out the sweep.
IN THE RANKS
Utah's
Marcela Lopez is ranked No. 83 in the country after posting a 4-2 record so far on the season. In the fall she claimed a runner-up title at the ITA Regionals and made an ITA Championship appearance where she picked up two wins in consolation play.
HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women's tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 50-44 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera's leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Highlights included their inaugural win against Cal and a remarkable triumph over No. 16 Washington, marking their highest-ranked victory in the Pac-12 era. Also during the 2023 season, Mortera led the Utes to the most Pac-12 wins since 2015. In the Fall 2023 slate, Mortera's squad found success in the ITA Regionals, with
Emma Kamper staking claim to the singles B draw and
Marcela Lopez claiming second in the singles main draw, sending her to nationals.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA
Minnesota currently sits at 7-1 overall in 2024 after being handed their first loss of the season by Oregon last Saturday. The Utes have faced the Golden Gophers only once in Feb. of 2016, where Utah claimed a tight 4-3 match victory.
SCOUTING MEMPHIS
Memphis will enter the weekend boasting an 8-3 overall record and coming hot off a four-match win streak. Utah holds a two-match history against Memphis, collecting victories in both matches. The Utes last took on the Tigers in February of 2023, collecting a 4-1 win.
NEXT UP
The Utes next head to San Diego for two matches, playing UC San Diego on Friday Mar. 1 and San Diego State on Sunday Mar. 3.
