CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Despite
Haley Denning blasting the first home run of her collegiate career, the No. 20 University of Utah softball team could not find a victory on Saturday, dropping a 7-1 decision to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and suffering a 4-2 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers on the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.
Utah's 2024 record now stands at 7-6.
Utah vs. Notre Dame
After scoreless softball over the first two frames, the Utes broke the ice in the top of the third.
Kaylah Nelsen led off the inning with a double and pinch-runner
Sianni Sakai took third on a groundout one batter later. When
Aliya Belarde reached on a single that deflected off Notre Dame's pitcher, Sakai scampered home with the game's first run.
Unfortunately for the Utes, the Fighting Irish used two hits and an error to load the bases with nobody out in their half of the third and capitalized in the form of three runs.
The Utes had a chance to get those runs back in the fourth, mounting a bases-loaded threat of their own, but they were kept off the scoreboard. Notre Dame then closed out the scoring with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Utah vs. Wisconsin
In Utah's second game of the day, they were again the first squad to dent home plate and again it was Nelsen who got things started. Utah's first baseman singled to start the second, moved to second on a sacrifice, third on a grounder and scored when
Julia Jimenez poked a hit through the middle.
In the fifth, Denning struck for her first round-tripper as a Ute. The graduate student from Arizona belted the first pitch she saw to dead center and the ball soared over the fence to give the Utes a 2-0 advantage.
That lead would not be enough for the Utes, however. The Badgers immediately got a run closer in their half of the fifth on a single and an error and they staged another rally in the sixth, capped by a go-ahead two-run homer. The Utes were able to bring up the tying run in the seventh, but that was as close as they would come to making a comeback.
