LOVELAND SKI AREA, Colo. – Racing for the fourth time in the last five days,
Kaja Norbye and
Mikkel Solbakken each skied to the podium for the Utah Ski Team as the Utes opened the Denver Invitational with the first of two slaloms at Loveland Ski Area.
Norbye won the women's first run on the way to a silver medal, while Solbakken placed top-three in the morning and remained in that spot in the afternoon to earn bronze.
Though Utah finds itself third in the team standings (153 points) after one day, just 17 points separate the Utes from host Denver for the lead (170). Colorado is second right now with 155.5 points.
"Overall, today was a good day," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "Kaja is skiing with power and is such an intelligent skier. She knows what she is looking at when she inspects. She's got some good finishes now. Michelle went back to her skis from last year and got better and better throughout the day. She skied well and we expect some good things tomorrow. On the guys side, Mikkel produced two runs where he was right on it. It was great for him to get a podium. Willy is starting to look like the old Willy and is really skiing nice. Unfortunately on the guys side, we didn't score three up high—but we'll be right back at it tomorrow."
Norbye tallied a 1:38.36 and was joined in the top-six by
Madison Hoffman (1:39.07).
Michelle Kervén had a nice second run, putting her 13
th overall (1:40.02) in a performance that included a top-four run in the afternoon.
Melanie Dahlberg rounded out the Utes in the top-20, placing 18
th.
Solbakken clocked a 1:37.39 between his two runs for third place, joined in the top-five by
Wilhelm Normannseth (1:37.77). Both sat third and fifth, respectively, at the break and remained in those spots at day's end. The Utes also picked up points from
Sindre Myklebust with a 27
th-place result (1:40.52).
