Back in Action
Thursday's alpine race and Friday's Nordic competition will be the first events for the Utah Ski Team since January 20 for the alpiners, and January 13 for the Nordic team.
All four of Utah's alpine races, to date, took place from January 17-20 at the new Spencer F. Eccles Olympic Mountain Center at the Utah Olympic Park.
Kaja Norbye had top-10 results in all four races, including a slalom win and bronze in the other slalom race.
Oliver Parazette and
Mikkel Solbakken contributed three top-10 performances apiece. On the Nordic side,
Karianne Dengerud has three podiums and two victories out of her five starts on the year—all top-10 finishes.
Brian Bushey,
Joe Davies and
Tom Mancini each own a win in men's Nordic competition.
Repping the U
The Utes anticipate being a little shorthanded while in Colorado, albeit for good reason as both alpine and Nordic members of the team compete abroad at the FIS World Junior and U-23 Championships.
Jay Poulter is in France at alpine junior worlds, and made his first start on Wednesday in Super G and the team combined event. He placed seventh in Super G (1:12.71) as the top American finisher, while Poulter was part of a Team USA men's combined pair that placed sixth. Alpine junior worlds continue through February 3.
In the Nordic realm, five current Utah athletes are expected to compete at the Nordic World Junior and U-23 Ski Championships, scheduled for February 5-11 in Planica, Slovenia. The U-23 Nordic group includes the current Utah connections of
Brian Bushey and
Walker Hall representing the United States, plus
Joe Davies with Great Britain. Named to the United States' World Juniors team from the Utes are
Zachary Jayne and
Nina Schamberger.
Next Up
After the Denver Invitational wraps on February 10, teams will prepare for the 2024 RMISA Championships, hosted by Montana State.
Alpine will compete in a February 22 GS qualifier at Big Sky Resort before the championship meet on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24. Nordic races at the RMISA Championships will be held in Bozeman, Montana, at Crosscut Mountain on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 24-25.
