STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The Utah Ski Team had a pair of individual wins as teams from across the RMISA raced in giant slalom on Thursday at Steamboat Resort. Making her collegiate season debut after racing on the World Cup circuit,
Madison Hoffman won both runs en route to a winning combined time of 1:57.42, while
Mikkel Solbakken notched his first victory as a Ute in the men's competition (1:48.88).
Though the day was not part of a meet—so no team scores were kept—individual results do count for the athletes toward NCAA Championships qualification. Today's race was the second of three total RMISA qualifiers; another extra GS qualifier will be held on February 22 in Big Sky, Montana.
"Today was great," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "The team camaraderie and atmosphere are so good right now. Mikkel is an incredibly good skier and smart. He can find out what's happening on the hill without us telling him. He just has that feel. The guys had a good day. We had some good discussions on racing and doing everything they know how to do. For the schedule Madi is on, it's like she's never left. She is such an incredible teammate and mentor to the crew. She's been on a grind racing (on the World Cup). But she got back with the crew and figured it out so quickly."
Including Hoffman, four Utes were in the top-11 of the women's race.
Kaja Norbye narrowly missed the podium in fourth place (1:58.94) and
Kaila Lafreniere had her first collegiate top-10 result (2:00.27).
Claire Timmermann also contributed an 11
th-place finish (2:00.31). Norbye had top-five runs on both ends of the race.
"It was so fun racing with the team today," Hoffman said of the day. "The vibes among everyone were great! Everyone skied so well, and I'm just glad I could contribute to the overall performance."
In men's action, Solbakken won the opening run and held on in the finale despite an 11
th-place second run.
Wilhelm Normannseth (1:49.43) and
Sindre Myklebust (1:49.59) were seventh and ninth, respectively, and
Gustav Vøllo was 11
th on the day. Normannseth's second run was top-three and
Oliver Parazette had a fifth-best second run, climbing eight spots from the morning to take 16
th on the day (1:50.56).
