SALT LAKE CITY –
Mariah Lopez threw a complete game shutout and allowed only one hit to help lead the University of Utah softball team to a 4-0 shutout of the Boise State Broncos on Wednesday evening at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
With three wins in their last four tries, the Utes are now 17-11 in 2024. Boise State drops to 20-11.
"I'm happy with the win today," said coach
Amy Hogue. "Abby [Dayton] and Kaylah [Nelsen] continue to lead the way for us offensively. And because of the way Mariah pitched, we only needed to score one.
"Mariah was absolutely spectacular today. She and Chloe really had a good thing going right from the beginning. Mariah had a feel for her change-up and had them guessing. They have some really patient hitters and every time she got ahead in the count, she got them out."
The Broncos had an early opportunity in the first inning thanks to a pair of walks, but a strikeout by Lopez ended the inning and that was as close as Boise State would get to scoring for six innings. The Arizona native proceeded to retire the next 15 batters she faced, striking out a pair in the second and third and not allowing the ball to be hit out of the infield in the fourth or fifth.
It wasn't until one out in the seventh that the Broncos got their first hit, but Utah's starter ended the game soon after by inducing a grounder to second that was turned into a double play. Lopez finished with eight strikeouts while throwing her sixth complete game of 2024.
The Utah offense got on the board for the first time in the second thanks to a single, an error and a walk that put runners on second and third. Another Boise State error then sent both runners across and staked the home team to a 2-0 lead.
The Utes added another run in the fourth thanks to an
Abby Dayton triple and a
Kaylah Nelsen sacrifice fly and closed out the scoring when a
Sophie Jacquez infield single brought Dayton home in the sixth. Lopez took care of the rest.
