STANFORD, Calif. – Despite a solid effort from
Brooklyn Carreon in her first career start, the University of Utah softball team ended up on the short end of a narrow, 2-1 defeat at the hands of the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal on Saturday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Boyd and Jill Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
Utah's overall mark stands at 17-13 with a 1-7 conference ledger. Stanford is now 24-5 and 5-0.
For the second straight day, Utah's lineup went to work in the very first inning to dent home plate.
Aliya Belarde began the frame by dunking a single into center, then
Kaylah Nelsen lined a hit into left to bring up
Abby Dayton. Utah's center fielder bounced her team's third straight single into right, allowing Belarde to speed home and put the visitors up one.
In the circle for the Utes was Carreon and she kept that lead intact over the first three innings, stranding runners in each frame. In the third, the Cardinal put two runners on with one out, but Carreon got the next two hitters to ground out, ending the threat.
The Cardinal did tie the game in the fourth and had a chance to take the lead in the sixth, but
Sarah Ladd, who replaced Carreon in the circle in the fourth, maneuvered around a lead-off triple with help from a diving catch at third by
Hailee White. Stanford did find a way to tally their second run in the seventh, however, to claim a 2-1 victory.
