OGDEN, Utah –
Julia Jimenez homered and drove in four runs and
Mariah Lopez collected eight strikeouts in just four innings to help the University of Utah softball team overpower the Weber State Wildcats, 9-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Wildcat Softball Field in Ogden, Utah.
Utah can now claim a 22-17 record so far in 2024, while Weber State falls to 17-18.
"Today, the team came to the field with a sense of urgency," said coach
Amy Hogue. "They were on a mission and scored early and often and did a great job in the circle. It's a nice win for us heading into a road PAC-12 series this weekend."
The Utes seized the initiative at the first opportunity, using a
Kaylah Nelsen double and a walk to
Abby Dayton to start a first-inning rally. A
Haley Denning bunt single followed by an error plated Nelsen for the day's first run, then Jimenez sliced a two-run double into the right field corner for a 3-0 Utah advantage.
Jimenez was back in the batter's box in the third inning and belted a 1-0 pitch over the right-field fence for her third four-bagger of the season. Four batters later, a double by
Aliya Belarde brought in
Shonty Passi to make the score 5-0 and an RBI fielder's choice courtesy of
Taylor Jacobs in the fourth upped Utah's lead to six.
In the circle, Lopez was making sure the Wildcats had no answer for Utah's offensive barrage. She stranded a runner on third in the first by inducing a popup and following it with back-to-back strikeouts. Lopez worked out of a two-on, nobody out jam in the second and finished her outing by striking out the side in the fourth. The senior southpaw snagged her 13th win of the season by scattering three hits over four innings and not walking a batter.
The final runs the Utes needed to end the contest after five innings came in the fifth, when they put two on with one out. Dayton pushed an RBI single through the middle and Denning followed with a line drive into left for a run-scoring knock of her own. Jimenez then picked up her final RBI of the day on a fielder's choice before
Raci Miranda locked down her team's win with a scoreless bottom of the fifth.
