SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis program is slated for a pair of matches this weekend, taking on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday, April 12 at 1:30 p.m. before facing the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday, April 14 at 11 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT
In their last outing, Utah faced No. 9 USC and fell 5-2. However, the Utes claimed multiple victories over ranked opponents. In doubles,
Marcela Lopez and
Ana Luiza Cruz defeated a No. 14 Trojan duo, Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charney, 6-2.
In singles, Kat Lyman snapped No. 68 Cayetano's 16-match win streak 6-2, 6-2 on the fourth court. On the No. 2 court, Yuhan Liu claimed a 6-1, 7-5 victory over No. 28 Charney.
IN THE RANKS
The Utes are currently ranked No. 48 in the country, after falling to No. 10 USC and No. 15 UCLA. Utah's
Marcela Lopez and
Ana Luiza Cruz are ranked No. 58 in the country after defeating No. 14 USC duo, Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charneyis. Lopez is ranked No. 114 in the country in singles after posting a 8-6 record on the season. In the fall she claimed a runner-up title at the ITA Regionals and made an ITA Championship appearance where she picked up two wins in consolation play.
HEAD COACH RIC MORTERA
Ric Mortera is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Utah women's tennis program entering the 2024 spring slate. So far in his tenure he has accumulated a 55-48 overall record. In the 2022-23 season, under Coach Mortera's leadership, the Utes notched a 13-11 record and topped the ITA Mountain Region rankings. Highlights included their inaugural win against Cal and a remarkable triumph over No. 16 Washington, marking their highest-ranked victory in the Pac-12 era. Also during the 2023 season, Mortera led the Utes to the most Pac-12 wins since 2015. In the Fall 2023 slate, Mortera's squad found success in the ITA Regionals, with
Emma Kamper staking claim to the singles B draw and
Marcela Lopez claiming second in the singles main draw, sending her to nationals.
SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE
The Sun Devils are ranked No. 31 in the country according to the most recent ITA poll. ASU currently sits at 11-8 overall and 3-4 within the Pac-12. The Utes have met the Sun Devils on 11 previous accounts, only yielding one victory. During their last match in April of 2023, ASU defeated Utah 4-0.
SCOUTING ARIZONA
The ITA ranked Arizona at No. 42 during the last poll. The Wildcats hold a 14-10 record overall, and have gone 2-5 in conference play. Utah has a 13-match history against Arizona, with the Wildcats holding a 7-6 edge over the Utes. Utah last met Arizona in April of 2023, where the Utes fell 4-3 to the Wildcats.
