TEMPE, Ariz. –
Mariah Lopez fired a three-hit shutout and the University of Utah softball team completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona State Sun Devils with a 4-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference action at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
The Utes have now collected four straight wins to improve to 25-17 overall and 7-11 in the Pac-12. ASU owns a mark of 18-21 and 2-13 in conference.
Lopez and Arizona State's Deborah Jones kept both offenses in check for almost the entire day, with Jones working around several walks and stranding multiple runners on base in the first, third and fifth innings.
Lopez was even more dominant and she spent the first six innings holding the Sun Devils to two hits and walking only one while racking up six strikeouts. She struck out the side in the second, then set down ASU in order over the next two innings. Lopez didn't permit the home team to get a runner into scoring position until the sixth and she stranded that runner by logging a strikeout and a popout to keep the contest scoreless.
The Utes' lineup finally solved Jones in the seventh, starting the game's only rally with two singles sandwiched around a walk.
Haley Denning then untied the game by smacking a two-run double off the center field wall and the Sun Devils followed with back-to-back errors. The first one plated
Aliya Belarde with the inning's third run and the next miscue allowed Denning to trot across with a final insurance tally.
The rest was handled by Lopez, who gave up only a two-out single before locking down her 15th win of the year. The senior from Arizona is the first Ute since Katie Donovan in 2016-17 to post back-to-back seasons with at least 15 triumphs.
