IRVINE, Calif. – The Utah Baseball team was defeated by USC, 8-2, on Friday night at Great Park.
Core Jackson hit safely for his seventh straight game played and extended his on-base streak to 26 games.
Matt Flaharty (5) and
Landon Frei (4) also extended their respective hitting streaks. But errors plagued both teams defensively as the clubs combined for eight on the night, including five for Utah.
USC got on the board with a run in the second inning, two more in the third and a four-spot in the fourth.
The Utes broke into the hit column with four in the fifth inning. Two singles and an errant pickoff throw put
Landon Frei and
Matt Flaharty into scoring position, then the pair scored when
Hunter Antillon put a double into right center field. Jackson added an infield single but that would be all for Utah in the fifth inning.
Utah had baserunners in each of the next three innings and got a runner to third base in the seventh, but were unable to get any further runs across the plate.
Merit Jones had five strikeouts in his start but received the loss.
Bransen Kuehl contributed 3.2 innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts and left-hander
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola also made an appearance out of the bullpen.
