DURHAM, N.C. - The 2024 season came to an end for the University of Utah softball team with a 5-1 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Durham Regional at Duke Softball Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Utah's final 2024 record stands at 35-22.
The Gamecocks were the first team on the scoreboard, putting up four first-inning runs on an Aniyah Black grand slam. In the bottom of the first, the Utes put together a similar threat, loading the bases with two outs, but they were unable to push any runs across.
Mariah Lopez ensured South Carolina's lead did not grow after their early outburst. Over the next five innings, she threw up nothing but zeroes, retiring the side in order twice, while also stranding runners in scoring position in the second, fourth and fifth frames. In six innings of relief, the senior from Arizona gave up only a single hit and one unearned run while striking out six. Those punchouts put her career total at 582, third-most in Utah history.
The Utes got their only run of the day in the sixth, when
Abby Dayton doubled and later scored on a
Sophie Jacquez groundout. That double put Dayton's final 2024 clip at .431, the highest by any Ute in a single season since the program joined the Pac-12.
Utah's offense also included a 2-for-3 day for
Haley Denning, bumping her career average up to .393, which now stands as the highest career average in program history. Denning also ends her time at Utah as the school's all-time leader in runs, hits and at-bats.
