The First Pitch: Things to Know
The No. 25-ranked Utah Baseball team enters the weekend tied for first place in the Pac-12 Conference standings as the Utes head to Eugene for a three-game league series at No. 21 Oregon. First pitch in the series opener will be at 7:05 p.m. MT on Friday night inside PK Park in Eugene, Oregon.
- In addition to being included in D1Baseball.com's poll, the Utes received votes this week in the NCBWA and USA Today Coaches polls. In the available history of the five current major college baseball polls (D1Baseball.com, Baseball America, NCBWA, Perfect Game and USA Today Coaches), this is the first time the Utes have been ranked.
- Oregon is ranked No. 21 in the Baseball America poll and receiving votes in both the NCBWA and USA Today Coaches polls.
- The Utes are looking to keep the momentum going in league play as the team has won six of its seven Pac-12 Conference series, including five in a row. Three of the six series wins have been on the road. The six Pac-12 series wins trail only the 2016 conference championship team (8) for the most since Utah joined the league entering the 2012 baseball season.
- Idle on the midweek scene due to final exams, the Utes were last in action with a series sweep over UCLA last weekend at Smith's Ballpark. It was the program's first-ever sweep against the Bruins, and was headlined in part by three solid starts from Bryson Van Sickle, Merit Jones and Colter McAnelly. Randon Hostert also contributed two relief appearances, including a 4.2-inning effort in the series opener to help the club to a 12-inning victory.
- At the plate, center fielder Kai Roberts hit .385 in the UCLA series with a home run among his five hits, six RBI nine total bases and three steals—each team-bests. His final stolen base of the weekend gave Roberts his 28th of the season, a new Utah single-season record and the most in the Pac-12 this year to date.
- Roberts (.364) and shortstop Core Jackson (.367) continue to pace the Utes with both ranking in the top-five in the Pac-12 in batting average. Roberts, a Utah native from Lehi, sits about 100 points North of where he finished the 2023 season hitting .266. His stolen base total sits seventh in the country.
- Entering the final month of the regular season, Utah remains one of the Pac-12's highest-scoring offenses at 7.5 runs per game. It's the second-most in the conference, top-75 in the country and continues a steady climb over the last three seasons. In part thanks to assistant coach Todd Guilliams' guidance, the Utes averaged 6.2 runs per game in 2022 and rose to 6.7 runs per game in '23.
- The pitching staff also has shown continued progress from a year ago. Now with a 4.71 ERA on the season, the Utes rank third in the Pac-12 and 44th in the country. It's an improvement from a 7.12 tally at the end of the 2023 season.
- Gary Henderson's club reached the 25-win mark in their first 36 games, the fastest in recorded program history. The previous-fastest was when three different Utah teams reached the 26-win mark in 41 games, a five-game difference from the 2024 club.
- Once back from Eugene, the Utes will turn their attention to a Tuesday, May 7 game down at Utah Tech. First pitch in that contest will be at 4 p.m. MT in St. George, Utah.
