The First Pitch: Things to Know
The Utah Baseball team is seeded No. 7 in the 2024 Pac-12 Baseball Tournament, slated to begin Tuesday in Scottsdale, Arizona at Scottsdale Stadium. The tournament begins with Pool Play; the Utes are in Pool C with fourth-seeded USC and third-seeded Oregon.
- The three pool winners will advance to Friday's single-elimination semifinals along with one Wild Card team. The Wild Card will be determined by the best record of the non-pool-winning teams. Then the championship game will be held Saturday night.
- Tuesday's Pool Play game with USC will mark Utah's fourth straight game against the Trojans; the Utes are looking to turn the tables after USC swept the series between the teams last weekend. Oregon took two of three games from the Utes in Eugene earlier this month.
- Despite being picked to finish 10th in the Pac-12 Conference Preseason Poll, the Utes went on to finish the regular season with 32 wins, the third-most in program history. In April, Gary Henderson's club entered the D1Baseball.com top 25, the program's first time being included in the five current major polls (D1, NCBWA, Baseball America, USA Today Coaches, Perfect Game).
- The Utes won six of their 10 regular season conference series, including three of five on the road. The team's 16 conference wins were the most since 2016 (19); also Utah won 14 true road games, the most by a Pac-12 team.
- Utah's offense has been led in part by shortstop Core Jackson (.364) and center fielder Kai Roberts (.353), who ranked third and sixth in the Pac-12 for regular season batting average. Jackson also hit .398 during conference play, the second-highest in the league behind only Arizona State's Kien Vu.
- Roberts had one of the most improved seasons by a Ute in recent memory, raising his average by nearly 100 points from the 2023 season (.266). Along the way, he set both the Utah single-season and career records for stolen bases; he leads the Pac-12 and ranks 14th in the country with 32 swipes on the year. In his first three seasons combined, Roberts had 33 stolen bases.
- Roberts is among the Pac-12's best this season when it comes to batting average (6th, .353), hits (3rd; 79), doubles (4th; 20), and RBI (4th; 58).
- Entering the Pac-12 Tournament, Utah is one of the Pac-12's highest-scoring offenses at 7.1 runs per game. It's the fourth-most in the conference and continues a steady climb over the last three seasons. In part thanks to assistant coach Todd Guilliams' guidance, the Utes' production is up from 6.7 runs per game last season and 6.2 runs per game in 2022.
- The Utah offense struck out 367 times during the regular season--the fewest of any Pac-12 offense and 36 less than the next-closest club.
- Southpaw Bryson Van Sickle has led a pitching staff that dropped its ERA by almost two full runs, now at 5.08. Van Sickle tossed two complete games during the regular season, including a "Maddux" shutout at Arizona State during April. He needed just 82 pitches to secure that victory and struck out eight.
- Van Sickle's 2.78 regular season ERA ranked third in the Pac-12 while his 2.44 clip in league play was second-best. He pitched the most innings (87.1) of any arm in the league this regular season.
- On the other end, fellow lefty Micah Ashman had 11 saves during the regular season, tying for the Pac-12 lead. It earned Ashman a spot on the Midseason Watch List for the NCBWA Midseason Stopper of the Year Award.
- Utah's win in the Oregon series finale (May 5) gave the program its 30th victory of the season. It came in a total of 45 games, the fastest in school history. Previously, the 1997 team held that record doing so by reaching the mark in 47 games. The 2002 Utes were the last team to reach the 30-win mark.
