Opening Statement
Made that a lot more dramatic than we needed to, but we hung on and got the win. I'm proud of our guys. Didn't really play as smart as we needed to. Had a chance to really put the game away completely [and] let them back in it. Credit them for continuing to fight and battle. Very proud of our freshman quarterback. To put things in perspective, you come into a No. 14 team in the country's home stadium with a true freshman QB, that's pretty impressive. Proud of our guys, proud of him, proud of Micah Bernard. He gave us a huge day, nearly 200 yards. We were the more physical football team without question, rushed for [249 yards], gave up about [48] yards [rushing], so that tells the tale of the line of scrimmage right there. Made some nice plays up the field on the balls at times and then, their quarterback stuck some things in there that we just didn't play as well, but overall, great start to the Big 12 conference schedule and its just every week now. We'll have a couple byes mixed in, but we have to get ready for a tough game next week. Apparently, we came out of the game pretty healthy. We'll find out a lot more tomorrow, but I think we came out with nothing significant, I hope. I'm proud of the defense. The defense played lights out until the mid-point of that fourth quarter. Then we got a little soft, but anyway, big win and we just have to keep going, one week at a time.
On how the quarterback reps were handled during the week…
We split them. The days were different. It wasn't the same every single day. Cam took a majority a couple of the days, Isaac took the majority the other two days.
On his record when the team rushes for over 200 yards and what it says about the team…
It says we should try to run for 200 yards every week, that's for sure, but's its our [modus operandi]. Our [modus operandi] is to be a physical run team and play action pass off that run game and you saw the touchdown pass to Brant Kuithe. That was maybe the biggest play of the game, one of the biggest plays of the game, down there when we were trying to milk the clock and they were stacking the box with every defender. It was a great catch, great concentration. We controlled the clock for 42 minutes and change, they were 17 [minutes] and change. That's a huge discrepancy. We made 22 first downs, they made 11. There are some statistical imbalances that say we should've won that game by a lot more, but that's how it is. You never discount a win, particularly against a ranked opponent on the road and I couldn't be more proud of our football team right now.
On how they slowed down Ollie Gordon…
We'd never faced him, so it was our first time facing him. The tape last year is very impressive, hasn't really got on track yet this year, but I'm sure he will. We were pleased he waited one more week to get on track because he's a terrific back, over 2,000 yards of offense last year. This year, he hasn't found his groove just yet, but he will. He's too good of a player not to.
On what changed on defense during Oklahoma State's touchdown drives…
They made some plays and we didn't play as well as we needed to.
On when he found out he'd be starting…
Minutes before the game, but I have to be prepared and I felt like I did some good and did some bad, but the defense and this guy right here [Micah Bernard] really pulled it out for us.
On the mindset during Utah's final possession...
I had full trust in our offensive line and Micah. I'm sure everyone knew we were going to run the ball because all we needed was 10 yards and those guys on the field were like this is the best 10 yards of our life and Micah plowed right through and got the first down.
On his 62-yard run…
I heard the play call and I saw a guy come through the line of scrimmage just like last week, gave him a little [stiff arm]. I was just thinking that we need to get [away] from being backed up. The coaches put the ball in my hands and let me see what I can do with it and just keep moving your feet and special things happen.
On the mindset during Utah's final possession.
Shoutout to the [offensive line]. The were creating some nice holes and staying man-on-man and I was just able to read through a lot of it. On that last drive, I think we go three yards on first down and then we got another [four] and I was like, OK, we need three more. Shoutout to the [offensive line] and they made the lane and I knew I just needed three.
On what the defense did that limited Oklahoma State's offense…
It's all about our culture. RSNB, relentless, smart, nasty, ballhawks. Scalley does a great job to get us prepared and have a good feeling of what they want to do and what they want to run, so I feel like it's definitely coach having us prepared.
On what was said after Oklahoma State's first touchdown…
Our mindset is cool, calm and collected always. No matter the circumstance, we're going to be even keel and always trust that the players on the field are going to make big time plays.
On what it felt like to help the offense…
It felt really great being out there with the guys and driving up and down the field and moving the ball really well.
