WILMINGTON, N.C. — After three days and 56 holes of competition, the University of Utah men's golf team finished tied for seventh place at the Williams Cup, hosted by the University of North Carolina.
The Utes ended the tournament with a final score of 16-over 880 (288-297-295). The program's strongest showing at Eagle Point Golf Club came on day one, when
Gabriel Palacios and
Sergio Jimenez each netted 3-under rounds to help Utah's four-man team finish even-par 288.
Palacios finished as Utah's top ranked player in the individual standing, tied for 10th place, with a final score of even-par 216. The junior fired off impressive scores of 3-under 69 and even-par 72 before ending the week with a 3-over 75. The top 10 finish marks Palacios' third in as many tournaments.
Jimenez, who played well through the first two rounds and entered day three tied for 10
th place, also netted a final round score of 3-over 75, ending the tournament tied for 12
th place (1-over 217), one stroke behind his teammate from Guatemala.
Davis Johnson, the nation's No. 5 ranked NCAA golfer entering the tournament, posted Utah's best score of round three.
The Arizona native was among the highest risers of day three, jumping 19 spots in the standings with a masterful 1-under 71 round. One stroke under par through eight holes, Johnson rode a streak of 10 consecutive pars into the clubhouse to finish the tournament on a high note, ending with a three-day total of 5-over 221, tied for 27
th place.
Similar to Johnson,
Brandon Robison also played his best golf of the week on day three. The fourth-year senior settled in to shoot a 2-over 74, his best round of the tournament by two strokes. Overall, Robison finished with a three-day total of 10-over 226, tied for 56
th place.
Freshman
Kade McDonough, playing in his first collegiate tournament, rounded out the Utah roster with a 25-over 241 score.
With three top 10 finishes in Utah's first three tournaments of the season, Palacios is well on pace to break his previous season-best of five top 10 finishes. Additionally, through his first nine rounds of the year, Palacios boasts an adjusted scoring average of 67.9. Though the season is still early, the average is nearly 3.5 strokes less than Utah's program record of 71.2, held by
Blake Tomlinson (2021-22, min. 10 rounds).

UP NEXT
Utah will travel to Atlanta, Georgia to take part in the 19
th edition of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational.
The tournament, hosted by Georgia Tech, will feature 14 teams from across the country, six of which are inside the top 25 of the first NCAA College Golf ranking (Oct. 15).
