ATLANTA, Ga. — The Utah golf team, ranked No. 9 in the nation in the latest
Clippd Scoreboard golf rankings, finished day one of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate in 10th place with an even-par 288 team score.
Playing in their first of three rounds at the par-72, 6,993-yard Lakeside course, the Utes were led by
Gabriel Palacios, who ground out an impressive 2-under 70 round.
Palacios, who entered the tournament as the No. 3-ranked collegiate golfer in
Clippd's individual rankings, found his groove after the 15th hole, shooting three consecutive birdies to close out the day. With the strong finish, the junior from Guatemala enters round two within the tournament's top 20, tied for 15th place in a field of 75 golfers.
The under-par effort extends Palacios' impressive run to open the year, giving him his eighth round of even par or better through Utah's first 10 rounds of the season.
Utah's second-lowest round of the afternoon came from redshirt senior
Davis Johnson, who utilized a steady back-nine to card an even-par 72.
Johnson started out hot, firing off two birdies in his first two holes before cooling off to close out the front nine with a 1-over 37. From there, the Arizona native locked in for a consistent back nine that saw him birdie the 11th and par the final seven holes of the day. With the strong showing, Johnson enters round two in a 10-player tie for 29th place.
Brandon Robison and
Sergio Jimenez rounded out Utah's four-player scoring group with respective rounds of 1-over 73, each tied for 39th place.
For Robison, consistency came in the back half of the round, as the senior turned a front-nine 3-over 39 into a back-nine 2-under 34. Jimenez had a more balanced round, shooting a 37 on the front and 36 on the back.
Freshman
Kade McDonough rounded out Utah's five-man squad with a 7-over 79.
