Morgantown, W.V. – Junior outside hitter
Kamryn Gibadlo's career-high night helped to elevate the Utes to a five-set victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers Friday night at WVU Coliseum.
Utah got off to a hot start in set one before dropping sets two and three to the Mountaineers. Set four ended up being a precarious battle before the Utes dug deep to push the match to set five where they ultimately secured their second conference win of the season, 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11).
SET ONE
Two straight aces from
Emrie Moea'i put the Utes up 5-4 early in the first set.
Utah kept the pressure up through the set, building a 15-11 lead. However, the Mountaineers were not deterred by the Utes' aggressive play and made it a two-point game, 18-16.
Despite WVU's attempted comeback, Utah hit set point, 24-20 before getting to 25 and taking the first set.
SET TWO
WVU recovered well to start the second set, jumping to a 4-2 lead, until
Neea-Maria Joki closed the gap with back-to-back aces, 4-4.
Leah Wilton-LaBoy evened things up again with an ace, 8-8.
The Utes and Mountaineers traded nine ties and five lead changes before West Virginia pulled ahead to take set two, 25-20.
SET THREE
Moea'i got her fourth ace of the match to get the Utes within three in the third set, 16-13, before WVU pulled ahead. Utah made it interesting down the stretch, getting within two, but West Virginia ultimately took the set, 25-23.
SET FOUR
Utah bounced back to start set four, jumping out to a 9-5 lead over the Mountaineers highlighted by a Wilton-LaBoy ace.
Gibadlo recorded her 11
th game with double-digit kills and digs in the fourth set, while also setting a career-high (at the time) of 22 kills to make it a 12-5 game for the Utes.
West Virginia pulled back within one of Utah, 17-16, but Utah forged ahead, 20-16.
The Utes held on to push set five against WVU, 25-19.
SET FIVE
Set five started close, but the Utes pulled ahead 12-8 off another Joki ace with the match later being iced by Moea'i and Gibadlo kills, 15-11.
STANDOUT STATS
- Utes Total Stats: 65 kills off 161 total attempts, 11 aces, 60 assists, 12 blocks, 78 digs.
- Gibadlo notched her 11th game of the season with at least 20 kills and 10 digs.
- Moea'i tied her season-high for blocks (9) while adding 12 kills with a .360 hitting percentage, and four aces.
- Wilton-LaBoy set a career-high in kills (4), while tying her career-high in assists (50) and adding 10 digs, three blocks, and two aces.
- McKenna Payne set a career-high in aces (2) and contributed four assists and eight digs.
- Grace Moss set a career-high in digs (9), while Levani Key-Powell and Iliana Linahan flirted with their dig career-highs adding 21 and 11 to the count respectively.
UP NEXT
The Utes come home to the Jon M. Huntsman Center next week to celebrate Halloween with their fans.
First up, Utah hosts Kansas State in their annual Dark Mode game on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. MT before welcoming in UCF on Halloween night, Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. MT. Trick-or-Treating will proceed the match with the Knights.
Both matches will be available to watch on ESPN+.
