SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Volleyball falls short in a Big 12 matchup against the Kansas State Wildcats after the Utes forced a fourth set.
The Utes made a late six-point run in the fourth set after falling behind, 24-17, but it wasn't enough to force a fifth set. (16-25, 21-25, 26-24, 23-25)
SET ONE
Set one started off close until the Wildcats took advantage of the Utes' errors. It wasn't until a kill by
Emrie Moea'i got the momentum started for the Utes, 3-9.
The Utes made multiple attempts at point runs, but Kansas State never broke their momentum and took the first set 16-25.
Â
SET TWO
The Wildcats started off the second set strong before a kill by
Kamryn Gibadlo got the Utes on the board 1-4.
Allie Grossenbach added a huge solo block that brought the score 9-11.
After a rally for the ages, the Utes took the point after a Gibadlo kill went off the Wildcats block.
Despite closing in on K-State's pressure, the Utes could not come up with the set two victory, 21-25.
Â
SET THREE
Similar to the first two sets, the Wildcats opened the scoring going up 0-3 until a
Neea-Maria Joki kill got the Utes on the board. Gibadlo backed up Joki with a service ace to make the score 2-3.
Utah found their rhythm and kept the score close despite the constant back-and-forth.
Levani Key-Powell had a kill that put the Utes in prime position, 5-7. Moea'i had a huge kill and block assist that forced the tie, 7-7.
Leah Wilton-LaBoy had two back-to-back aces that forced another tie and put the Utes up, 13-12.
The third set ended in a battle, but a Joki block gave the Utes the third set win, 26-24.
Â
SET FOUR
The Wildcats opened up play with an early 0-3 lead before Joki put Utah on the board with a kill.
The Wildcats kept the lead early, 15-19, despite the Utes' multiple attempts to take momentum late in the fourth set.
The Utes battled back late in the fourth set going on a 6-point run which included back-to-back Gibadlo kills with
Katelynn Field tallying her own kill. During the run, Utah's Ultimate Ute
Briar Rose could be heard all around the Jon M. Huntsman Center— her voice never wavering about the Utes' ability to make a comeback.
The Wildcats sealed the deal and took the fourth set, 23-25 to win the match 1-3.
