PRINCETON, N.J. –
Kathryn Grant and
Callie Eaglestone finished one-two on the women's 1-meter springboard and
Elias Petersen placed second on the men's 3-meter as the University of Utah diving program competed at the second day of the Big Al Invitational.
Grant finished first in prelims with a 308.80, setting a new personal best and the fourth-best mark in program history, before winning finals with a 307.15. Eaglestone finished fourth in prelims before setting a new personal best in finals with a 300.15, the first time in her career she has eclipsed the 300-point mark.
"Kat and Callie put on a show tonight on 1-meter, it was an incredible performance," head coach
Richard Marschner said. "Kathryn balked on her second dive and you can go one of two ways with that – you can let that get you down or you can light the fire – and it lit a fire under her, she was absolutely lights out from there and really dug herself out of a hole to win the event. You shouldn't win an event with a balk since its essentially a 15-point penalty and she dove out of her mind."
"Callie did great to get in second, breaking 300 points for the first time, and it was a great evening overall with Elias trying out some new dives on 3-meter to get him ready for February and March as well," Marschner added.
Petersen placed second with a 357.05 in finals after finishing fourth in prelims with a 328.40. In consolation finals of the men's 3-meter,
Attila Bernatsky (276.35) and
Alex Just (257.00) finished two-three.
Sarah Kauffman scored a 224.90 on the 1-meter consolation finals in her first time competing in the event this season.
"Looking forward to platform tomorrow and seeing what we can do with our tower crew," Marschner concluded.
Looking Ahead
Platform prelims kick off at 10 a.m. MT on Saturday, Dec. 6, with finals getting underway at 3 p.m.
