FRESNO, Calif. –
Brooklyn Carreon fired six scoreless innings for the first shutout of her collegiate career and the University of Utah softball team cruised to a 9-0 victory over the LMU Lions on Friday after beginning the day with a 6-5 loss of the UCSB Gauchos on the first day of the Fresno State Kickoff Classic at Margie Wright Diamond in Fresno, Calif.
The Utes now own a record of 4-3 in 2025.
"Obviously, game one was a disappointment," said coach
Amy Hogue. "We have plenty of learning to do, and that one will sting for a while. We had opportunities to tack more runs on and didn't and it came back to bite us. Shelbee threw great and we should get that win for her.
"In game two, Brooklyn was such a highlight for me. She is such a good role model for her teammates. She has trained for a long time to be prepared for these starts in the circle and has done well with them. She is such a team player. I'm happy for her. A complete game shutout is a great accomplishment."
Utah vs. UCSB
The Utes started the day with a back-and-forth affair against the Gauchos that began with four scoreless innings, thanks in part to the work of Utah hurler
Shelbee Jones, who stranded runners in scoring position in the first and the fourth.
Utah's offense got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, sparked by a walk to
Shonty Passi and a
Kaylah Nelsen bunt single.
Hailey Deter sent both runners to the plate by stroking a double into right-center and Deter touched home two batters later on an infield hit off the bat of
Shelbi Ortiz.
The difference between the teams was reduced to 3-1 in the sixth and UCSB rallied to take its first lead in the seventh. A pair of walks followed by three straight hits led to four runs and the Utes found themselves down a pair with only three outs remaining. Utah was unwilling to give up however, and used an error, a
Jolie Mayfield triple and a single courtesy of
Reese Lee to knot the game at five. Unfortunately for Utah, they were unable to match a run by UCSB in the eighth.
Utah vs. LMU
Carreon got her day started with a perfect first inning, then worked around a lead-off double in the second. She received some help from her defense in the third, when
Kendall Lundberg threw out a potential base stealer and then Carreon stranded two more runners in the fourth and fifth. The sophomore right-hander finished off her shutout with her second strikeout of the day in the sixth to lock up Utah's win.
On offense, the Utes provided Carreon with more than enough run support, beginning with a two-run double from
Kendall Lundberg in the third.
Utah's largest outburst of the day came in the fifth, when they blew the game open with a five-run frame. An RBI single by Ortiz got the scoring started and
Sianni Sakai made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly. Ortiz crossed the plate when Lee lashed a double off the wall in left and Lee raced home one batter later on a
Hailee White hit. Deter capped the rally with her second knock of the stanza, a run-scoring single through the middle. A two-run base hit by Nelsen in the sixth provided the final runs of the night.
"Reese and Deter are both swinging with such confidence," said Hogue, "and are leading our team offensively right now. I'm hoping we can gain some momentum from that win since we've got four more games to play here in Fresno."
