The First Pitch: Things to Know
The Utah baseball team (4-0) looks to keep the momentum going after a successful opening weekend when the Utes return to Southern California for the Tony Gwynn Legacy series. Utah's slate of four games will feature four different opponents, with the series co-hosted by San Diego State and UC San Diego.
- Utah will take on San Diego State to lead off the schedule Friday night, then return to Tony Gwynn Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a meeting with WAC foe Seattle. Then on Sunday, the Utes will head over to La Jolla and Triton Ballpark for a clash with UC San Diego.
- Though technically not part of the Tony Gwynn Legacy, Utah will face Long Beach State in a neutral-site contest on Monday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
- This will be Utah's third trip to the Tony Gwynn Legacy in the last four seasons. The Utes swept their four-game swing in the 2024 tournament while also winning two of three games back in 2022.
- In the 2022 iteration of the series, Utah opened the weekend with an outstanding performance by former Friday night starter Matthew Sox; the California native was two outs away from a no-hitter in a win over Fresno State. It earned Sox praise as a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week.
- The Utes began the 2025 season with a four-game road sweep of Pepperdine, outscoring the Waves by a combined score of 30-8. After a 10-inning victory in the season opener, Utah followed with three more wins, each by at least five runs.
- Right-hander and sophomore Colter McAnelly was named the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week, commemorating his Opening Day start. Though McAnelly received a no-decision, his six innings pitched tied the most by a Big 12 pitcher for Week 1. He held Pepperdine to just one run in his outing, retiring 16 of the next 18 batters after a leadoff home run in the first inning.
- Utah had three of the four starters go at least five innings against Pepperdine as the pitching staff combined for a four-game ERA of 1.95. It ranked third in the Big 12 for the season's opening weekend, while the staff's WHIP of 1.0 was second in the Big 12 and No. 22 nationally.
- Second baseman Matt Flaharty (.471) and outfielder Santino Panaro (.412) each hit over .400 in the Pepperdine series, with each finishing one game a home run short of the cycle. In addition, shortstop Core Jackson went 5-for-10 in the final two games with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.
- Now members of the Big 12 Conference, the league is Utah's fifth affiliation since resuming varsity baseball in 1948. Previously, the Utes have played in the Skyline Conference (1948-62), WAC (1963-98), Mountain West (1999-2011) and Pac-12 Conference (2012-24). Since joining the WAC, Utah has won five conference championships, most recently in 2016 as a member of the Pac-12.
- A combination of returning talent and new faces are shaping up to make 2025 one of the most anticipated seasons in recent Utah history. The Utes return two hitters that hit over .300 last year in infielders Drake Digiorno and Core Jackson, as well as MLB Draft selection and right-handed pitcher Merit Jones.
- In addition, junior Kaden Carpenter projects to remain a mainstay in the outfield after slashing .278 / .374 / .481 as a sophomore. He played in 51 games with 44 starts, tallying nine doubles, three triples, six home runs and 26 RBI.
- The Utes finished 2024 with 33 wins, tying the second-most in program history. Despite being picked 10th in the Pac-12 Preseason poll, Henderson's club entered the D1Baseball.com top 25 in late April and was two games out of first place entering the penultimate Pac-12 series.
- Next weekend, the Utes will head over to the Inland Empire for a split series against UC Riverside and California Baptist. Utah will square off for two games apiece against each club.
