CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The University of Utah softball team was defeated 7-6 by the Cal State Fullerton Titans and 6-1 by the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday on day two of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
Utah's 2025 record now stands at 4-11.
Utah vs. Cal State Fullerton
It didn't take long for the Utes to score in their first game of the day, as a walk, a single and an RBI hit by
Hailey Deter put the visitors on the board before the Titans could record an out. Utah increased its lead to 3-0 with back-to-back RBI singles from
Kaylah Nelsen and
Jolie Mayfield and when
Kayla Lyon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, the Utes had a quick 4-0 edge.
Fullerton answered, however, scoring twice in the first, twice in the second and once in the third to move in front by one. Utah retook the lead in their half of the fourth when
Shonty Passi scored on a fielder's choice and Lyon drew a bases-loaded walk, but the Titans immediately evened the score in their half of the frame.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth, but a perfectly executed squeeze play by the Titans in the bottom of the seventh plated the winning tally.
Utah vs. Northwestern
Utah's battle with the Wildcats was a pitcher's duel that saw
Shelbee Jones hold Northwestern to a single unearned run through five stanzas. She stranded runners in scoring position in the first two innings and struck out the side in the second. Jones finished the night with six strikeouts, while only walking two and permitting four hits.
The Utes cobbled together a rally in the fifth, with
Reese Lee leading off with a walk and moving to second on a sacrifice. With two outs,
Sianni Sakai slapped a safety into right and Lee scampered home to knot the score at 1-1.
Unfortunately for Utah, that tie didn't hold. The Wildcats scored five times in the sixth to pull away for the victory.
